IDRF's tsunami donation receipts cross US $600,000

Vivekananda Kendra, Port Blair holds regular cultural and remedial coaching classes, in the relief camps of Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Bhatu Basti School, Haddo Tamil Medium School, I. T. F. ground camp, Junglighat and fishermen colony of Municipal Ward No 7. Stories, patriotic songs, yoga, simple exercises and surya namaskars are being taught. Around 250 students are deriving benefits through these programmes. The teachers of VKV Hut Bay, who have lost everything in the tsunami attack, are also working as volunteers for conducting these activities.

In a joint venture with Excel Computer Goal Ghar, the Kendra is conducting free computer literacy programmes in Excel computers and Bhatu Basti school relief camp. A total of 40 students are receiving training. In addition, the Kendra has also distributed schoolbags, books and school stationeries to the affected children. In Hut Bay, the Kendra, along with Dweep Peedit Sahayata Samiti (DPSS) volunteers, cleared the VKV campus, which was adversely affected due to the sea-water and made it a base camp for service activities of the DPSS and Ramakrishna Mission. Volunteers staying in the base camp go to various relief camps to distribute material including food and clothing. The Sewa Bharati, an associate of DPSS, is taking medical care to the people in Little Andaman. The service started in Little Andaman on January 2 is continues to this day.
