Farmers need profitable price, not loans-Baba Takwale

?The government'spolicy to give more loans to farmers may prove dangerous. What the Indian farmers need today is profitable price of their crops, not loans,? said Baba Takwale, general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS). He was speaking at the concluding function of the three-day meet of BKS all India management committee. He said the domestic market must be provided for agriculture produces and only as much should be imported as much is required. He demanded to re-impose the qualitative restrictions that had been removed four years back. ?This government has not made any provision for organic farming in its polices. Its all efforts are concentrated only on chemical agriculture, which is dangerous for the future of Indian agriculture,? he warned.

Shri Takwale urged the government to prepare an extensive action plan by forming a farmers? development fund so as to save farmers from their plight. ?While announcing the minimum support price of crops, the government should also add 15 per cent profit to that,? he said demanding a national water policy to solve the water problem and also to ensure proper water distribution among all states. ?Since 70 per cent of our total import consists edible oils, why does not the government encourage Indian farmers by providing them more relaxations to grow oily crops? After all, how long would we depend upon import? The farmers? problems should not be ignored in the country where 70 per cent population depend upon agriculture alone,? he said and urged the government to concentrate more on irrigation. He opined that the UPA government'snegligence to the project of interlinking of rivers might prove destructive.

The meeting also adopted a resolution demanding the government to form farmers? development fund taking 20 million dollars from the reserved foreign exchange and spend the amount only on completing irrigation projects, connecting villages with roads and providing markets for agriculture produces. The BKS also urged the government to bring agriculture out of WTO.
