The Kanaknagar Primary School is one among the lakhs of schools across the country where the festive mood was in full visibility on August 15 this year. The 58th Independence Day was celebrated at Kanaknagar and the children in the school shouted slogans at the top of their voices??August 15 ki jai, Swadhinata Divas ki jai.? The tricolour flew high as if keeping time with the words of Jana gana mana adhinayak jai hai.

However, the festive mood in the school did not last long. Five men and women, identified as Moiuddin, Nasiruddin, Eisuddin, Erani Bibi and Kashmiri Bibi forced their entry into the school premises. While the children were singing the national anthem, the intruders played havoc there?they uprooted the bamboo pole on which the Indian tricolour was hoisted.

As the teachers and students tried to prevent them from doing so, the five miscreants beat up the teachers and students and set the national flag on fire.

The state administration has chosen to remain silent spectators to the anti-national activities of these immigrants, particularly when important defence installations are there in Kendrapara.

Demoralised and rejected, a teacher of the school, Umesh Charan Das went to the police outpost situated at Talchuan and filed a First Information Report, (FIR) in the hope of getting the outsiders punished.

The local police did not act. Though the incident took place on August 15, the District Superintendent of Police, Shri Gangwal directed the Rajnagar police station in-charge to make an on-the-spot inquiry on August 17. Police officials did visit the spot, but no arrest had been made even on the fourth day of the incident. All the four accused, the locals confirmed, were illegal Bangladeshi migrants. The state administration has chosen to remain silent spectators to the anti-national activities of these immigrants, particularly when important defence installations are there in Kendrapara.

However, on being contacted, District Collector Hemanta Sharma said that the accused would be dealt with as per the law.
