Born at Kantalpara on June 26, 1838 five years after the death of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, he is known as ´Sahitya Samarat´.
His father, Rakhal Chandra was an aristocratic Brahmin and held the coveted post of Deputy Collector.
He studied in an English school at Midnapore and later joined the Hooghly Mohsin College for further studies. In 1857 he joined the Presidency College at Calcutta as a student of law. In the year 1858, he graduated from the University of Calcutta.
It was in the year 1876 that he made his first contribution to the cause of modern science in India by raising funds for an organisation, called The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, founded by Dr Sircar. Through his writings in the Journal Banga Darshan, he appealed to the people to contribute generously for Dr Sircar´s organisation.
His first fiction appeared in a novel entitled Rajmohan´s Wife in the year 1864. His other literary works include Durgeshnandini, a Bengali romantic novel published in 1865, and Kapal-kundala in 1866. It was however Anandamath, written in 1882, where we see his genius as a historical fiction writer.
He died in the year 1894 at the age of 56.
