Prof D.N. Tripathi appointed new chairman of ICHR

Professor D.N. Tripathi has been appointed the Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) for a period of three years. He has taken over the charge with effect from February 5, 2004.

Born on June 13, 1938, in Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), Shri Tripathi is the former Head of the Department of Ancient History, Archaeology and Culture and Director, Rahul Peeth, D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, UP. He has been the member of ICHR since 1997. He did his M.A. in Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology from Allahabad University in 1958. Holder of Certificate in Greek language from Athens University, Greece, Shri Tripathi did his Ph.D. from Southampton University (UK) in 1976.

Having rendered his services to the Gorakhpur University for more than 25 years, Shri Tripathi has got the teaching experience of about 40 years. Several awards and scholarships have been conferred upon him, some of which are Greek Government Scholarship, British Council Scholar and others. Besides, he has actively participated in international cultural activities. He was a member of a cultural delegation of ICCR to Indo-Greek festival, ICHR delegate to 36th ICAANAS Conference at Canada and to 15th UISPP Conference at Liege (Belgium). Prof. Tripathi has immense experience in archaeological excavations and explorations not only in India but in foreign countries also. Moreover, he has conducted museum studies and attended conferences and seminars all over the country and abroad. Shri Tripathi is the author of many historical and cultural books, such as, Bronzework of Mainland Greece from 2600 BC to 1450 BC, Studies in Mediterranean Art Archaeology Series, Archaeology and Tradition, Puratattva Paribhasha Kosha, Cultural Interactions Between India and Greece, Hinduism and Hellenism, and Excavations at Ushmanpur Diha.
