Chennai: In a pioneering move set to significantly impact the landscape of Indian languages in the digital age, the Tamil Artificial Intelligence (AI) project was officially inaugurated today at the IIT Research Park in Taramani, Chennai. Spearheaded by Tamil Nadu BJP secretary Ashvathaman and developed by Defo Tech Private Limited, a company operating out of the Chennai IIT in association with the IIT research park, this initiative marks India’s first entirely homegrown AI project dedicated to an Indian language.
The launch, held virtually via video conference, saw the enthusiastic participation of Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, who lauded it as a “path-breaking initiative” poised to create a “big impact on our Indian languages.”
The project aims to serve as a bridge between the ancient richness of Tamil literature and the capabilities of modern scientific advancements. Tamil, revered globally as one of the oldest living languages, has been a recipient of particular affection and encouragement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who frequently highlights its rich cultural heritage on various international platforms. This AI endeavor is seen as a direct extension of national efforts to ensure the language adapts and thrives within the contemporary technological world, embodying the values of “Aram” (moral virtue), pride, culture, and the distinct identity of the Tamil people.

During his inaugural address via video conference from Delhi, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the transformative potential of the Tamil AI project. “It’s a path-breaking initiative and will create a big impact on our Indian languages,” he stated, emphasizing how the project “holds the promise to transform how AI is used with the Tamil language for cultural preservation through technology.” The Minister also took the opportunity to commend Tamil Nadu’s burgeoning growth in the electronics field, projecting that the state is on track to become a hub for wheel manufacturing services, thereby opening new industrial avenues across the region. Furthermore, he assured attendees that the applications developed through this Tamil AI project would be considered for integration into the Indian Railways, following consultations with senior officials.
Ashvathaman, elaborated on its core objectives in his welcome and introductory speech. He articulated a comprehensive vision for the platform, stating that ancient Tamil literature, including foundational works like Tolkappiyam and the expansive Sangam literature, will be digitized and integrated into the Tamil AI, effectively creating a vast digital repository. “In the future, this Tamil AI will be like the treasure for all forms of Tamil literature for all,” Ashvathaman asserted. He further detailed the practical applications of the AI, including its capability to “check the spelling mistake and grammar mistake of Tamil words” and to “convert ancient works into modern words,” thereby making classical texts more accessible to contemporary and future generations. This functionality, he believes, will prove “very helpful for the future generations” in understanding and preserving their linguistic heritage.
The inauguration event also saw significant virtual participation from international dignitaries, reflecting the global interest in such linguistic AI advancements. YB Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity, Government of Malaysia, and Chelmsford City Council Councillor Cllr Pappa Vetri joined the event remotely, alongside Professor V Kamakoti, Director of Madras IIT. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit and the potential for cross-cultural exchange that such a project can foster, particularly in preserving and promoting languages with deep historical roots.
The launch of the Tamil AI project comes at a crucial time when global efforts are increasingly focused on developing AI solutions that are culturally and linguistically nuanced. The success of the Tamil AI could also serve as a blueprint for similar projects in other Indian languages, aligning with the broader national vision of leveraging technology for cultural and linguistic empowerment.
