Kolkata Rape Case: Day after trainee Doctor’s murder, former RG Kar Principal ordered urgent renovations at hospital

A day after the body of the trainee doctor was discovered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, a letter obtained reveals that former principal Sandip Ghosh ordered immediate repairs and renovations within the institution just a day after the grim discovery.

The letter, dated August 10, 2024, was addressed to the Public Works Department (PWD) and requested urgent renovations to the on-duty doctors’ rooms and attached toilets across various departments of RG Kar Medical College. Ghosh, who resigned amid widespread outrage over the incident, cited deficiencies in the facilities as the reason for the immediate request.

“I would like to inform you that there are deficiencies in on-duty doctors’ rooms and separate attached toilets in various departments of RG Kar Hospital. You are hereby requested to do the needful immediately as per the demand of resident doctors of RG Kar Hospital,” the letter reads.

The timing of the renovation order, issued just a day after the body of the deceased doctor was found, has raised suspicions and led to allegations of tampering with the crime scene. Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Mazumdar has voiced concerns about the renovations near the seminar hall, where the tragic incident occurred. Mazumdar has also shared a purported circular, allegedly signed by Ghosh, which indicates that the renovation work commenced shortly after the murder.

“The order, signed by Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College, is dated August 10, just one day after the victim’s death. Despite allegations from colleagues and protesters about tampering with the crime scene, the Police Commissioner denied it,” Mazumdar posted on X.

The memo to the PWD executive engineers detailed the request for repairs to attached toilets and other facilities. It was stated that the deficiencies had been discussed and resolved in a meeting with the Principal Secretary of the Department of Health & Family Welfare and the Director of Medical Education.

Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh along with three others on charges of corruption and financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This action follows a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered a probe into alleged irregularities.

The CBI’s investigation into Ghosh and the college’s financial dealings has led to the arrest of two vendors, Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, and Afsar Ali, the Additional Security to Dr. Ghosh. The arrests underscore the serious nature of the allegations against Ghosh and his associates.
