Renowned Telugu litterateur and historical novelist Dr Mudigonda Sivaprasad, popularly known as the ‘Emperor of Historical Novels’, passed away on October 8, at the age of 86, in Hyderabad.
Having devoted more than six decades to Telugu literature, Sivaprasad made a distinctive contribution to the historical novel genre. His speciality lay in presenting history not merely as a collection of dates, kings and wars found in textbooks, but as a living narrative filled with characters and conflicts. With the aim of making history accessible and easy to understand through storytelling, he authored numerous novels.
He conducted extensive research into ancient Greek literature, drama and philosophy and wrote authoritative works on these subjects.
Against the historical backdrop of Amaravati, he wrote six novels. Having also studied Christianity, he authored eight books under the title ‘Christian Ashtakam’.
His published works include ‘Kakatiya Kala Darshanam’, ‘Amritodayam’, the first historical novel on the Musunuri emperors, ‘Pakala Cheruvu Kathalu’ and the essay collection ‘Vignana Vipanchi’, among others. In total, 136 books were published under his name.
Sivaprasad was born on December 23, 1940, in Alluru village of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh. He was married, but his wife passed away several years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Sushma and Sreelekha, and a son, Indu Sekhar.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the demise of Acharya Mudigonda Sivaprasad, stating that his contributions as a novelist, historian, critic and essayist would remain memorable. He recalled Sivaprasad’s efforts to foster interest among Telugu readers in the country’s history, culture and traditions.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, in his condolence message, said, “I am saddened by the demise of Professor Mudigonda Sivaprasad, a renowned writer who gave Telugu literary form to nationalist history and served as Head of the Telugu Department at Osmania University. His contribution as a founding member of the Jateeya Sahitya Parishad in presenting India’s authentic history through novels will remain unforgettable.
Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao expressed deep grief over the demise of Professor Mudigonda Sivaprasad, describing him as an eminent Telugu scholar, essayist, litterateur, spiritual thinker, former Telugu professor at Osmania University and author of more than a hundred books. He recalled that Sivaprasad, honoured with the title ‘Emperor of Historical Novels’, authored several acclaimed works, including ‘Thanjavur Vijayam’, ‘Anubhava Mantapam’, ‘Naganika’, ‘Amritodayam’ and ‘Malik Kafur’.
Andhra Pradesh BJP President PVN Madhav said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of senior Sangh karyakarta, renowned historical novelist, litterateur and researcher Mudigonda Sivaprasad. Known as the ‘Emperor of Historical Novels’, he made remarkable contributions to Telugu historical literature, introducing Indian history, culture and national consciousness to society through his writings. Works such as ‘Malik Kafur’, ‘Kakatiya Vijayam’, ‘Aavahana’, ‘Achumbitam’ and ‘Rohanam’ stand as testimony to his literary brilliance.”
He completed his MA in Telugu at Andhra University and pursued his MPhil and PhD at Osmania University. Influenced by the works of Viswanatha Satyanarayana and Nori Narasimha Sastry, he began writing novels.
In 1959, he also worked as a teacher at Wesley High School in Secunderabad. He subsequently served as a Telugu professor at Osmania University and retired from service in 2000.
Among Sivaprasad’s notable works are ‘Pattabhi’, ‘Aavahana’, ‘Sripadarchana’, ‘Residency’, ‘Sravani’, ‘Sreelekha’, ‘Vamsadhara’, ‘Vijayam’, ‘Thanjavur’, ‘Basavageetha’, ‘Mahisarga’, ‘Sagham Virigina Chandrudu’, ‘Ganganu Ganga Varaku’, ‘Pushyamitra’ and ‘Bible Decode’. These works attracted readers and earned him wide recognition.
He also played a significant role on the editorial team of Krishna Patrika and was a founding member of the Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad.
Sivaprasad received several honours in recognition of his literary contributions, including Kanakabhishekam and the presentation of a gold bracelet under the auspices of the head of the Kurthalam Peetham. He was also among the recipients of several awards, including the Ugadi Award from the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh.
Several scholars conducted research on his writings at Osmania University, Nagarjuna University, Sri Krishnadevaraya University and other institutions, earning PhD degrees for their work. Literary circles conferred several titles upon him, including ‘Charitraka Navala Chakravarthi’ (Emperor of Historical Novels), ‘Charitraka Navala Samrat’ (Monarch of Historical Novels), ‘Siva Kavindra’, ‘Abhinava Dhurjati’ and ‘Abhinava Palakuriki’.
Several of his works, including ‘Sreelekha’, ‘Sripadarchana’ and ‘Thanjavur Vijayam’, were prescribed as textbooks in educational institutions.
Sivaprasad also ventured into the film industry. His novel ‘Sripadarchana’, based on Tallapaka Annamacharya’s life, was serialised in Jagriti, with one lakh copies later printed. Though producer Sandilya planned to adapt it into a film directed by Jandhyala, the project was not completed. His novel ‘Swapna Kireetam’ was made into the film ‘Dasa Tirigindi’, while ‘Chandrakala’ inspired a documentary on Sammakka-Sarakka. He also provided writing assistance for Gunasekhar’s ‘Rudramadevi’ and authored ‘Gnapakala Pallaki’, chronicling personalities from the film industry.
