ABVP-led DUSU submits memorandum to Chief Minister on construction of hostels, safety audits, women’s safety and compensation for families affected by Satya Niketan incident
NEW DELHI: Delhi University Students’ Union President Yash Dabas, Secretary Riya Chhawdi, Joint Secretary Lakshya Raj Singh and ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma met Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and submitted a memorandum. The memorandum sought the construction of new hostels for students, safety audits of PG accommodations and buildings as per prescribed safety standards, adequate lighting at dark spots, sufficient Pink Booths and regular monitoring of patrolling vehicles for women’s safety, along with appropriate compensation for the families affected by the Satya Niketan incident.
The ABVP-led DUSU has consistently raised issues concerning student safety and hostel facilities before the university administration and the Delhi Government. Following the Satya Niketan incident, coordinated and effective efforts between the university administration and the government are essential to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Concrete and time-bound measures are necessary to address serious concerns related to the shortage of hostels, building safety and women’s safety. In this regard, the ABVP delegation submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, seeking effective action on these issues.
Delhi University Students’ Union President Yash Dabas said, “It is essential to ensure adequate and safe hostel facilities for students of Delhi University. Along with constructing new hostels, regular safety audits of PG accommodations and other buildings must be ensured in accordance with prescribed safety standards. All concerned institutions must take concrete measures in coordination with each other to prevent the recurrence of incidents such as the one at Satya Niketan. ABVP has urged the government to take necessary action on issues related to hostel construction and building safety.”
Delhi University Students’ Union Secretary Riya Chhawdi said, “Any form of negligence on the issue of women’s safety is unacceptable. Adequate lighting at dark spots in and around the university campus, along with Pink Booths and strengthened patrolling arrangements, is necessary. Effective and sustainable mechanisms must be developed to ensure a safe and secure environment for women students. ABVP has urged the government to strengthen these arrangements related to women’s safety and take necessary steps for their effective implementation.”
ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said, _On serious issues such as student safety, merely raising questions after an incident is not sufficient; continuous efforts and accountability are necessary to address them. ABVP has consistently placed concrete suggestions and demands before the university administration and the government for solutions to students’ concerns rather than merely raising them as issues. Following the Satya Niketan incident, safety audits of hostels, PG accommodations and other buildings as per prescribed standards, effective arrangements for women’s safety, and appropriate compensation for the affected families must be ensured. ABVP has urged the government and concerned institutions to take concrete action on these issues and ensure the safety of students.”
