MADURAI: A heartfelt Shradhanjali was paid to the late A Balakrishnan, former All India President of Vivekananda Kendra, whose life was defined by love, service, compassion and patriotism.
Balakrishnan, who passed away on August 27, 2026, dedicated more than five decades to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda and service to the nation. He was remembered as a committed Jeevanvrati who gave his life to social service and nation-building.
His association with Vivekananda Kendra spanned decades, during which he served as General Secretary from 1981 to 2001, Vice-President from 2001 to 2020, and later as All India President. His contributions to education and social development, particularly in the Northeast, remain a significant part of his legacy.
Before joining Vivekananda Kendra full-time, Balakrishnan served in the Indian Air Force for 16 years. In 1973, he chose to leave the service and dedicate himself completely to the mission of Vivekananda Kendra.
Remembered as an embodiment of Karma Yoga, he lived a simple and disciplined life devoted to serving society. His commitment to Swami Vivekananda’s message of universal brotherhood, service to humanity and national service inspired generations of workers and social activists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Balakrishnan’s remarkable contribution, highlighting his more than five decades of dedication to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda and service to society.
His passing is being mourned by the entire Vivekananda Kendra fraternity and countless people who drew inspiration from his life and work.
Shradhanjali to a great soul whose life stood for love, service, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the nation. Balakrishnan’s legacy of selfless service will continue to inspire generations.
