According to the result shared by ABVP, its candidates secured all 12 of the general seats in this year’s college union election. The victory comes a year after ABVP had secured a majority of seats at the institution, turning this year’s result into a clean sweep.
The Government Sanskrit College, Tripunithura, is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University and conducts its college union elections in accordance with university regulations.
From majority to complete sweep
The latest result represents a further consolidation of ABVP’s position on the campus. The organisation had made gains in the previous union election, and its latest performance has now given it all 12 general seats.
The result is being viewed by ABVP supporters in the context of wider political developments in Tripunithura, a municipality that has historically witnessed strong competition between the Left, Congress and BJP.
BJP’s historic breakthrough in Tripunithura
The student election result also comes months after the BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the Tripunithura Municipality in the 2025 local body elections. The 53-member council has 21 BJP members, compared with 20 from the LDF and 12 from the UDF.
The BJP subsequently secured the municipality’s chairperson and vice-chairperson posts. P L Babu was elected chairperson, while Radhika Varma became vice-chairperson. This marked the BJP’s first time leading the Tripunithura municipality.
The BJP’s rise in the municipality followed a closely contested election in which it emerged as the largest party with 21 seats, ahead of the LDF’s 20 and UDF’s 12.
The ABVP’s complete sweep at the Government Sanskrit College comes against this backdrop of changing political alignments in Tripunithura. While a college union election is distinct from a municipal election and should not be treated as a direct measure of wider electoral preferences, the consecutive ABVP gains indicate the organisation’s growing presence on the campus.
With ABVP moving from a majority in the previous election to winning all 12 general seats this year, the result marks a major organisational gain for the student body in one of Tripunithura’s prominent higher-education institutions.
