Rail connectivity in the Gwalior-Chambal region received a significant boost on August 18, with the inauguration of the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav virtually inaugurated the section and flagged off the extended Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur.

The newly operational 56-km Kailaras-Birpur section is expected to provide direct and more convenient rail connectivity between Birpur, Vijaypur and Sabalgarh and Gwalior. The service is also expected to provide residents with a more affordable transportation option while improving access to key urban centres.

Vaishnaw said the project would benefit residents of more than 100 villages spread across Bamor, Joura, Kailaras and Sabalgarh tehsils of Morena district, as well as Birpur, Sheopur and Karahal tehsils of Sheopur district.

The improved connectivity is expected to make it easier for people from these areas to travel to Gwalior for education, healthcare and employment. It is also expected to facilitate movement of goods and strengthen local trade and economic activity.

Gwalior-Sheopur rail link moves closer to completion

Vaishnaw said work on the 117-km Birlanagar-Birpur section, which is part of the Gwalior-Sheopur rail connectivity project, has progressed rapidly in recent years, with different stretches being completed and opened for passenger traffic in phases.

The 11-km Birlanagar-Rayaru section was opened in May 2023, followed by the 22-km Rayaru-Sumaoli section in August 2023.

The 14-km Sumaoli-Joura stretch became operational in November 2023, while the 14-km Joura-Kailaras section was opened in February 2024.

Subsequently, the 29-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh section was opened in 2025, followed by the 27-km Sabalgarh-Birpur section in 2026.

With the latest inauguration, the rail link has advanced significantly towards its planned connection with Sheopur Kalan.

Vaishnaw said work on the next stretches the 37-km Birpur-Seroni Road section and the 33-km Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan section is almost complete.

He expressed confidence that the entire Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan railway line would be completed and opened for passengers within the next few months.

The project is eventually expected to extend railway connectivity towards Kota, linking the Gwalior-Chambal region with major educational, commercial and industrial centres.

Railway investment in Madhya Pradesh rises nearly 24 times

Vaishnaw also highlighted the expansion of railway infrastructure across Madhya Pradesh, saying the state’s railway budget allocation had increased substantially over the years.

According to the Minister, the railway budget for Madhya Pradesh has risen from Rs 632 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 15,188 crore in 2026-27, an increase of nearly 24 times.

He said railway projects worth around Rs 1.55 lakh crore are currently under implementation across the state.

As part of the infrastructure expansion, 80 railway stations in Madhya Pradesh are being redeveloped. The state is also connected through five Vande Bharat and seven Amrit Bharat trains, he said.

Several major railway projects have been undertaken in the state, including the Manmad-Indore new line and multiple third- and fourth-line projects.

Vaishnaw said projects connected with Madhya Pradesh and approved during the third term of the incumbent government have a combined value of around Rs 64,512 crore.

He also said more than 5.54 lakh people have been recruited into Indian Railways since 2014.

The Minister highlighted railway electrification and modernisation as key areas of focus, saying electrification has reduced dependence on diesel and helped lower expenditure on imported fuel.

Scindia calls Birpur extension a ‘new beginning’

Scindia described the extension of the railway line to Birpur as a historic development for the Gwalior-Chambal region and termed it a “new beginning” for the area.

He recalled that the railway journey from Gwalior had earlier been extended through Bamore, Sumaoli, Joura and Kailaras. With the latest development, the service has now reached Birpur and is expected to subsequently extend to Sheopur and eventually Kota.

Scindia said the railway line should not be viewed merely as a means of transportation, arguing that improved connectivity would also provide people with better access to education, healthcare and other modern services.

The Birpur extension is expected to benefit residents of areas including Kailaras, Sabalgarh, Rampahadi, Vijaypur and Birpur.

He noted that the Kailaras section currently provides transportation facilities to around 10,000 people every day, with the extension expected to bring rail connectivity to a larger population.

Improved rail link expected to support industrial growth

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the expansion of railway infrastructure would strengthen connectivity between the Gwalior-Chambal region and the Malwa region.

He highlighted the Indore-Manmad new railway line and other infrastructure projects, saying they would open new routes and contribute to the emergence of a new industrial belt in the state.

Improved railway connectivity, he said, would also support tourism and other economic activities.

Yadav said rail connectivity was essential for industrial development and employment generation. He highlighted the potential of the Gwalior-Chambal region in emerging sectors such as battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing and tourism.

Better rail links, he said, would help these sectors develop by improving the movement of people, raw materials and finished products.

The Chief Minister also said the extension of railway connectivity from Gwalior towards Shivpuri and Sheopur would create a new dimension of development for Gwalior and the wider region.

Ongoing doubling, tripling and quadrupling of railway lines across Madhya Pradesh would further strengthen the state’s rail network and improve capacity, he added.

The programme was attended by Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar, Morena MP Shivmangal Singh Tomar and other dignitaries.
