Keralam Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar hosted the Independence Day ‘At Home’ reception at Lok Bhavan on August 15, with transgender representatives and differently abled children among the special guests, highlighting the importance of equality, dignity and social inclusion.

The ‘At Home’ reception organised by the Governor on Independence Day is a key component of Kerala’s official Independence Day celebrations. Held on the lush green grounds of Raj Bhavan, the reception was attended by people’s representatives, senior officials, armed forces representatives, freedom struggle veterans, vice-chancellors, Padma awardees, and prominent individuals from various fields.

This time, there was special emphasis on social inclusion, with the presence of transgenders and differently abled children as the special guests.

The presence of transgender representatives along with the distinguished guests was a remarkable feature of this reception. It was the first time in the history of ‘At Home’. It was a strong message of equality, dignity and inclusiveness. It underlined the democratic doctrine that every section has equal status in society and public life.

Last year, differently abled children were invited as special guests, a practice Lok Bhavan continued this year, reflecting the Governor’s emphasis on social inclusion.

The presence of transgenders and differently abled children gave the reception a distinct colour – a social dimension, with values of equality, dignity, accessibility and inclusion.

The reception was organised in the evening. The national flag was hoisted at Lok Bhavan in the morning. The occasion reminded people of the sacrifices of lakhs of freedom fighters. It emphasised the need to strengthen national unity and integrity.

The ‘At Home’ reception conveyed the vital message that every section of society deserves the spirit of freedom and democracy.
