New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has initiated a nationwide public consultation on the University Townships Initiative. It is seeking suggestions from stakeholders on the proposed development of university townships across the country. The consultation is being conducted through a survey questionnaire which is available on the MyGov platform. The initiative was taken up after the announcement made in the Union Budget 2026-27, under which the government proposed supporting State Governments in creating five university townships near major industrial and logistics corridors. To participate – check mygov.

University Townships to Bring Education and Industry Together

The proposed University Townships Initiative aims to create planned education hubs where several educational and related facilities are located close to each other. These townships can combine and include:

  • Universities and colleges
  • Research institutions
  • Skill development centres
  • Residential complexes for students and staff
  • Industry and companies

The main idea behind this is to create an education ecosystem where higher education, research, skill development and industry can work together in one area towards the same goal.

If these university townships are located near industrial and logistics corridors, students and universities could have better connections with companies. This could support internships, industry training, research collaborations, innovation and employment opportunities.

UGC Urges HEIs to Encourage Participation

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to share information about the MyGov consultation and encourage people to participate. UGC requires feedback from different groups which are connected with higher education including students, faculty members, researchers, administrators, staff members, alumni networks, incubation centres, innovation hubs and industry partners associated with higher education institutions. The feedback collected through the consultation will help in gathering opinions from different sections of the higher education ecosystem for the formulation of the proposed scheme.

The University Townships Initiative aims to include views from students, teachers, researchers and industry representatives while planning these new education hubs. Their suggestions can help the government understand the need for academic facilities, infrastructure, research, innovation and skill development. The initiative could also improve cooperation between universities, research institutions and industries. Setting up university townships near major industrial and logistics corridors could create more opportunities for industry-academia collaboration, research and skill development.
