NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has intensified its crackdown on social media accounts accused of circulating abusive, defamatory and inflammatory content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s security forces during the recently concluded Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests. As part of its investigation, the police have written to social media platform X, seeking the immediate removal of objectionable content and the identification of users responsible for posting it.

The action follows the registration of an FIR over the circulation of what police described as “derogatory, malicious and defamatory content” directed at constitutional authorities during the protests and the violence associated with the “Chalo Sansad” march.

Delhi Police have written to 'X' (formerly Twitter) in connection with a complaint that "derogatory, malicious and defamatory content is being circulated on social media platform targeting constitutional heads."

In its communication to X, the Delhi Police has directed the platform to immediately delete or disable access to the posts and videos under investigation.

The police have also sought comprehensive details of the account holders responsible for uploading the content, including their full names, residential addresses, phone numbers, email IDs, and account registration information. Investigators have additionally requested login and logout records with date and time stamps, along with any other information that may assist in the ongoing probe.

Authorities have instructed X to preserve all data relating to the disputed posts for future legal proceedings and to furnish a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) to authenticate the electronic evidence.

According to the complaint, multiple social media posts containing abusive language, defamatory remarks and offensive visuals targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi surfaced during the CJP demonstrations held at Jantar Mantar and the subsequent “Chalo Sansad” protests.

Police stated that the objectionable content was widely circulated across social media platforms, prompting cyber investigators to initiate legal action. Following the issuance of notices, several allegedly offensive posts and videos have already been removed from online platforms.

The Delhi Police said its cyber and social media monitoring units have been continuously scanning digital platforms to identify content that could violate the law or incite unrest. Whenever objectionable material is detected, notices are being issued to the concerned social media intermediaries directing them to remove such content promptly.

Officials added that surveillance of online activity linked to the protests remains active to identify inflammatory narratives and ensure compliance with legal provisions governing digital platforms.

The latest action comes days after reports indicated that Delhi Police had identified more than 400 social media accounts allegedly linked to Pakistan that were actively spreading misinformation, deepfake videos and fabricated narratives relating to the CJP protests.

Investigators are examining whether coordinated online campaigns were used to amplify false information, provoke unrest and target India’s constitutional institutions during the protests.
