Europe Boils: Heatwave kills 100+ sparking public health emergency; Exposes the dark side of western model of growth

Europe is warming faster than any other continent. 2026 has been a nightmare, with spiralling heatwaves & soaring temperatures killing more than 100 people, in a continent where ACs are a rare sight at homes. The heatwave is so wild that the EU headquarters was forced to turn off Air Conditioners to thwart the adverse impact. Meanwhile, the heatwaves are also exposing the dark side of the western model of growth!

The European continent is boiling beneath the camouflage called “heat waves”. The soaring temperatures and spiralling heat waves have so far killed more than 100 in the region, thus the year of 2026 being a nightmare for the people. As European homes are devoid of Air Conditioning facilities, people, unable to bear the scorching heat, are jumping into unsafe zones in rivers & water streams to cool themselves. These misadventures are leading to unforeseen deaths as an impact of drowning, triggering public health emergencies.

Moreover, the heatwaves are unmasking the dark side of western model of growth, which is unsustainable. The continent is evolving as urban heat islands. The intensity of heat during nights is much scarier for the people. As hot & unsustainable nights are emerging as a common phenomenon across Europe, the government has decided to keep the public places open during the night.

Museums, parks, libraries to be open during night to escape the heat

In Paris, Madrid, Barcelona & other cities, authorities have kept libraries, museums, schools and parks open during the night, which acts as cooling centres & climate shelters. This mirrors the intensity of health emergency & crisis escalated by the heatwaves in Europe. People are unable to bear the hot nights in Europe and are struggling to cope up.

By nature, the human body tends to cool itself during nights in line with the temperature outside. As the external temperature/the temperature in the surroundings fall during night, the internal or the temperature of the human body also falls and people usually go to sleep, which helps for the rejuvenation of the body. Scientists call this the recovery period.

However, in Europe, as an impact of the heatwaves, the temperature during night remains more than 20 degree celsius. People of the European continent, which is historically a cool climate country, are now unable to sustain the higher temperatures at night. The infrastructures, especially the houses in the continent are not heat resistant and cannot handle extreme heat. They are devoid of Air Conditioners as well.

Thus, the government has decided to keep public places open to beat the heat and people are visiting these spaces during night. However, as per experts, unsustainable temperatures, spiralling heatwaves at night, foiled sleep schedule induces stress & anxiety among the people. This can cumulatively lead to other health risks such as stroke, exhaustion, dehydration, lung infection etc. Children and elderly are more vulnerable, experts further warn.

Why doesn’t Europe have Air Conditioners?

Only a fifth of Europe is air conditioned. As a continent with a temperate climate that predominantly experiences a cool atmosphere, the infrastructure is built to sustain cool & harsh winters but not hot summers. The homes are designed in such a way that during summers they absorb & retain the heat. This phenomenon keeps the houses warm during winter.

This winter friendly homes are thus acting as a nightmare during heatwaves. The houses absorb extensive heat, retain them and in the absence of air conditioners as well, the houses act as hot ovens during night. Thus, people unable to stay in the hot bed houses during night, are thronging themselves to public places.

EU headquarters forced to shut down Air Conditioners

The hazardous intensity of the heatwaves are so terrible that the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, forced to shut down the Air Conditioning system, to thwart the adverse impact of the heat waves. This is the building that houses the office of the President of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen & her 26 commissioners. Staff working at the Berlaymont building received a text at midday, reading: “BERL — URGENT — Due to extreme weather conditions, forced shut down of air cooling system from floor 1 to 7 for the rest of the day”.

During heatwaves, the ACs are turned off to prevent compressors from overheating, avoid electrical fires and reduce strain on power grids. Unable to bear the heat the Acs may underperform or even potentially fail. However, the message to the workers in the EU headquarters, angered many, as they had to bear the terrible heat & work, in the absence of the Air Conditioners. Moreover, ACs from floor 1 to 7 were only turned off. However, ACs in the upper floors that house the office of the EU President & other high-ranking officials were not turned off. Thus, many workers criticised this as “feudalism” & disgrace.

Immediate reason behind 2026 heatwaves in Europe

The immediate geographical phenomenon that has triggered and escalated the heatwaves across Europe is a weather pattern called the “Omega block”. It is a vast dome of high pressure zone that parks itself over the continent. It forms the shape like a Greek letter omega. It also has cooler, rain-bearing systems around its edges. However, the hot air sits still in the zone for prolonged days, thus the sky stays cloudless and the atmosphere remains hot. Therefore, each night cools less than the last.

Heatwaves causing record deaths

Meanwhile, the heatwaves are causing record deaths across Europe. More than 100 people have died with France being the highest with 50 deaths. This week France hit a record temperature of 44.3 degree celsius and marked the hottest day ever in the past 80 years. Unable to bear intense heat, as per the reports at least 48 people have died, by drowning and other incidents. A 13-year-old girl who had gone for a dip with her family in the River Seine at Fontaine-La Port died as she didn’t know how to swim. Meanwhile, a young professional footballer remains in critical condition after being pulled out of the River Rhône in a park near Lyon.

Similarly, in Italy 5 people have succumbed to the heatwaves, who include farmers and labourers. In the UK, the ambulance crew has responded to record 642 calls in a single day, which includes most serious and life threatening cases as an impact of heat waves. In Germany, more than 20 people have lost lives in swimming related accidents, as they jump into the water sources to cool themselves. Also, a Red Alert has been issued in the Netherlands.

Heatwaves expose the dark side of the western model of growth

The terrible heat waves experienced currently across the European continent is the impact of the seeds sown by the Europeans centuries ago. The rapid industrialisation, exhaustive use of fossil fuels to seek economic goals & hegemonic primacy and ultimately the unsustainable western model of growth is yielding today’s heat waves.

The industrial hubs and concrete spaces have turned cities into urban heat islands. The massive, exotic buildings built with concrete, bricks, cement and assault absorb and trap heat throughout the day. The trapped heat is released from the structures slowly during the night. This vented heat warms up or even rapidly heats up the surrounding atmosphere, thus people experience unbearable heat even during night. This is called the urban heat islands effect.

The tall buildings further reduce or thwart the movement of wind in the vicinity. Thus, the wind is unable to drift the heat waves and cool the place. The blocked wind movement suspends the heat waves in the same place for a prolonged duration, thus further escalating the temperature and causing hazardous health risks. Massive vehicular movement, fossil fuel emission, pollution, ageing population of the continent, lack of heat resilient houses adds additional burden, thus altering the environment as an unbreathable & unsustainable landscape.

Scientists thus assert that a catastrophic heat wave of such an extent, which is currently witnessed in Europe, is virtually impossible, without human induced climate change & other unscientific, unsustainable actions. Thus, the historical misdeeds have yielded the heat waves of today that are killing hundreds of people across Europe. Historically, hailed as a global model for development, the western or European model of growth has limitations & loopholes in the long-term.

It is unsustainable, rooted in extreme industrialisation, unscientific consumerism, wealth concentration and resource depletion, which ultimately leads to ecological imbalance. These faultlines were overshadowed under the aegis of development and economic prosperity. However, the holistic impact of this growth model in the long-run, its risks & its fissures, are witnessed amidst the current heatwaves wildly engulfing Europe today.
