The meeting between US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has sparked a fresh diplomatic controversy in Tamil Nadu. The controversy stems not from the meeting itself, but from the US diplomat’s post-meeting statement, in which he referred to India and Tamil Nadu as “our two nations”. The remark has drawn strong objections from the Tamil Nadu BJP, which described the wording as inappropriate and sought a clarification.
BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary Ashvathaman in a press note, urged a correction to the U.S. Embassy’s communication.
Taking to the social media platform X, he expressed serious concern over the terminology used by @USAmbIndia, which reportedly referred to cooperation as being between “two nations” instead of describing it as cooperation with the State of Tamil Nadu.
Ashvathaman said, “It is highly inappropriate that @USAmbIndia referred to this as cooperation between ‘two nations’ instead of cooperation with the State of Tamil Nadu. India is one sovereign nation, and official diplomatic communications must reflect that constitutional reality. This is too significant to be dismissed as an inadvertent mistake.”
The BJP leader requested External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar to take note of the matter and act.

Ashvathaman said, “India is one sovereign nation, and all diplomatic communications by foreign missions must respect India’s constitutional framework and federal structure.”
He stated that references implying a relationship between “two nations” in the context of an Indian state are inappropriate and should be avoided in official communications.

According to sources, the US Consulate Chennai celebrated its National Day at Rajendra Chola Hall, ITC Grand Chola Hotel, on June 22, 2026. It was attended by politicians from different parties, IAS officers, bureaucrats, journalists and diplomats from various countries. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor was the centre of attention.
Aadhav Arjuna, Minister for Public Works Department (PWD) and Sports Development in the Tamil Nadu State Government; Vishnu, IAS, Secretary (III) to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu; Sandeep Nanduri, IAS; Chennai Corporation Commissioner Sameeran, IAS; Deepak, IAS, Guidance Cell; and M. Ravi, IPS, DGP (Retired), were among the important participants.
During the function, Sergio Gor, Aadhav Arjuna and Praveen Chakravarthy, MP (Congress), allegedly held a separate discussion for an extended period. Aadhav Arjuna later left the venue.
Former Foreign Secretary of India Kanwar Sibal, in a post on X, said, “The previous US ambassador Garcetti had said in his confirmation hearings that the US will do sub-national diplomacy in India. I drew attention then to the problematic nature of US embassy outreach to the states, which is normal, being framed as sub-national diplomacy. This could suggest encouraging sub-nationalism in India. When our ambassador in the US and others engage with different US states we do not call it sub-national diplomacy. Here too the US ambassador can call on CMs when he visits the states of India, but in the perspective of increasing US economic investment at the state level, not doing sub-national diplomacy, which has a wider political connotation.”
