Hindu Munnani’s state general council on June 21 adopted a host of resolutions, making a renewed appeal to the newly elected TVK government led by Chief Minister K Joseph Vijay to address several issues concerning Hindus and temple administration in Tamil Nadu. Among the key resolutions was a call for the government to honour the High Court’s orders on lighting the Karthigai Deepam at the ancient stone pillar in Tiruparankundram. The resolutions were adopted at the organisation’s state general council meeting held at Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli, which was attended by office-bearers from across the state.
The meeting held at Nellai, was presided over by state president Kadeswara C Subramaniam. Dakshin Bharat convenor K Bakthan, state general secretaries N Muruganandam and D Manohar, state organisers K Rajesh and KK Ponnaiah, state media in-charge AT Elangovan, Pasuthai editor Ganesan, and several other functionaries attended.

Functionaries of the Hindu Munnani general committee, including state, division, district, union and city office-bearers, participated in large numbers from across the state.
A resolution urged the newly formed Joseph Vijay-led TVK government to take stern action against the drug menace and crimes against women and children with an iron hand. It listed recent sexual assault incidents in the state, stating that they had become a daily affair during the MK Stalin-led DMK rule.
It further alleged that, like the previous DMK government, there was now a free flow of narcotics and that those who opposed it were killed brutally. It also alleged that both the government and the police machinery were acting as passive spectators.
Another resolution called for immediate action to alleviate the impediments and hardships faced by devotees at Thiruchendur, the second of the six abodes of Bhagwan Murugan, where devotees were allegedly forced to stand in queues for hours without basic amenities.
It stated that a review conducted by the Hindu Advocate Wing found financial irregularities, hardships faced by devotees, difficulties in obtaining accommodation in temple-run guest houses, and the collection of exorbitant fees by temple staff for quicker darshan.

The Council further stated that even the Minister had encountered these issues and had ordered action against those responsible. The resolution sought the implementation of measures similar to those followed at Sabarimala and Tirupati, where devotees throng in lakhs every day without facing such problems.
The third resolution urged the state government to honour the High Court’s orders and light the Karthigai Deepam at the ancient stone pillar. It alleged that the earlier DMK government had wantonly refused to implement the court orders and had filed appeal after appeal to appease minorities.
It urged the TVK government to respect the sentiments of Hindus by implementing the court orders and lighting this year’s Karthigai Deepam in December.
Another resolution urged the state government to protect the temples in the state, stating that Tamil Nadu has over 2,000 ancient temples that are more than 1,000 years old. It alleged that during the 60 years of Dravidian rule, many of them had fallen into a dilapidated condition and were crying out for renovation.
It further stated that temple properties under both legal and illegal occupation were not yielding any revenue to the temples. It also alleged that rare and precious idols had been stolen and smuggled to foreign countries, while the HR&CE Department was keen on collecting fees under various heads, leaving the maintenance and upkeep of temples to fend for themselves.
The resolution sought the establishment of a separate board to manage temple affairs and protect temples.
The fifth resolution demanded the removal of encroachments and shops adjacent to temple compound walls. It alleged that by making holes, drilling and installing fittings, the occupiers were causing damage to the walls.
Another resolution called for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), similar to those in Goa, Uttarakhand, Assam and Gujarat. It urged the TVK government to bring in legislation at the earliest to protect the rights of all religions uniformly.
A resolution condemned the move to disallow wristbands and other Hindu religious symbols in schools and to take action against Hindu students. Referring to State Education Minister Rajmohan’s speech, it stated that everyone has the right to follow their own religious identity and beliefs as envisioned in the Constitution.
It questioned whether the government would also ban Muslim students from wearing the hijab and burqa and Christian students from wearing the Holy Cross. It further alleged that in minority-run educational institutions, Hindu students were forced to recite Bible verses daily. It questioned whether the Minister would delist such institutions from the common category and classify them as Christian institutions. It added that if the government was for all, it should avoid such bans.
The final resolution demanded that the government take steps to protect and preserve the Thamirabarani river, which irrigates over 86,000 acres of agricultural land in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts besides meeting drinking water needs. It stated that the river holds spiritual importance and forms an integral part of the culture of Tamils and Hindus.
Sengol Aadheenam Sree La Sri Sivaprakasa Desiga Sathya Gnana Paramachariya, who was enthroned as the 103rd Guru, speaking on the occasion, said: “Even when many in the movement became field martyrs during its history of struggle, through unwavering determination it awakened Hindus in Tamil Nadu through various struggles, including the Muruga Devotees’ Conference. The movement that removed the anti-Hindu regime and was the primary reason for the change of government is the Hindu Munnani.”
