Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to witness a historic occasion on Saturday as President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi come together in Mayurbhanj district for a series of events highlighting development, tribal empowerment and infrastructure growth. The visit assumes special significance as Mayurbhanj is the home district of President Murmu, and it marks one of the rare occasions when the President and the Prime Minister will jointly participate in a public programme in Odisha.

Grand Welcome for President Murmu in Native Region

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival, President Murmu reached Rairangpur on Friday evening as part of her two-day visit to the state. She was accorded a warm welcome by Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, senior ministers, public representatives and local residents. The President’s visit to her native region generated enthusiasm among people across Mayurbhanj, who turned out in large numbers to greet the country’s first tribal woman President.

Soon after arriving in Rairangpur, President Murmu inaugurated several key public welfare and infrastructure projects aimed at improving healthcare, drinking water supply and administrative services in the region. She inaugurated the first free health camp organized in collaboration with AIIMS Bhubaneswar and interacted with doctors, healthcare workers and beneficiaries. The initiative is expected to bring specialized medical services closer to people living in remote and tribal areas of the district.

Pahadpur Visit to Highlight Tribal Heritage and Empowerment

On June 20, President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi will jointly visit Pahadpur village in Mayurbhanj district, the native village of the President. According to the official programme, the two leaders will offer prayers at the sacred Santhali Jahera and Ho Jahera groves, reflecting the rich tribal cultural heritage of the region. They are also scheduled to visit the Skill Centre and Pahadpur School, highlighting the government’s focus on education, skill development and socio-economic empowerment of tribal communities.

PM Modi Calls Visit a Significant Occasion

Prime Minister Modi, in a post on social media platform X, described the visit as a noteworthy occasion. He stated that he would be in Mayurbhanj on June 20 and that President Murmu would join the programme. The Prime Minister noted that Mayurbhanj is the President’s home district and said both leaders would first visit Pahadpur village before participating in an event marking two years of the present Odisha Government. He added that development projects worth more than ₹47,000 crore would either be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid during the visit.

Rairangpur Event to Mark Two Years of Odisha Government

Later in the day, President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi will participate in a major public programme at Rairangpur marking the completion of two years of the Odisha Government. The event, themed “Vikas Ra Dhara, Odisha Sara”, will showcase the state’s development achievements and future roadmap.

The programme will witness the inauguration and foundation stone laying of projects worth more than Rs 47,600 crore across multiple sectors, including energy, industrial infrastructure, road connectivity, drinking water, health, education, tourism and irrigation. The projects are expected to strengthen public infrastructure, improve connectivity, enhance energy security and generate employment opportunities across Odisha.

Major Energy and Industrial Projects to Get a Boost

Among the most significant projects for which foundation stones will be laid are the 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project and the Stage-II Expansion of the IB Thermal Power Station, comprising two units of 660 MW each. These projects are expected to strengthen Odisha’s energy sector and support long-term industrial growth.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) Project at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district. The project is expected to promote cleaner utilization of domestic coal resources, reduce import dependence and create new industrial and employment opportunities.

Other projects scheduled for foundation stone laying include a 300-tonne-per-day Municipal Solid Waste-based Compressed Biogas Plant in Bhubaneswar, a new bridge over the Kathajodi River connecting Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, the widening and strengthening of the Dhalpur-Harbhanga Road in Boudh district, the four-laning of a section of NH-353 from Nuapada to Ghatipada, the Kusumdihi Megalift Irrigation Project, an IGNOU Regional Centre and an Indoor Badminton Complex at Rairangpur.

Healthcare, Transport and Rail Projects to be Dedicated to the Public

Several completed projects will also be dedicated to the public. These include the 300-bedded District Headquarters Hospital at Boudh, 24 Atal Bus Stands and nine Automated Testing Stations across various districts of Odisha. Other projects to be inaugurated include the Nayagarh Town Bypass on NH-57, the underground pipeline component of the Kusumi Smart Irrigation Project, the Jakhapura–Jajpur Keonjhar Road–Baitarani Road Multi-Tracking Project, the Hindol Road–Meramandali Multi-Tracking Project, and a Sports Complex and Tribal Research Centre at Rairangpur.

Officials said the large-scale investment package reflects the Central and State Governments’ commitment to inclusive development and accelerated growth in tribal and rural regions. The projects are expected to create substantial employment opportunities, improve quality of life and strengthen Odisha’s position as a key growth engine in eastern India.

With elaborate security arrangements and extensive preparations in place, Mayurbhanj is set to host a landmark event that combines cultural significance, tribal empowerment and transformative development initiatives, making it one of the most important political and developmental programmes in Odisha in recent years.
