Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a man accused of creating fake matrimonial profiles, posing as a wealthy Hindu businessman and allegedly cheating multiple women through promises of marriage.
The accused has been identified as Karim Rafikbhai Sipai, a resident of Kadi in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. According to police, he operated on matrimonial websites under the name “Aditya Patel” and used forged government documents to convince women that he was a successful Hindu entrepreneur looking for a life partner.
Investigators say the accused specifically targeted widowed, divorced and single women who were searching for companionship and marriage.
Claimed to be MBA Graduate, IT Engineer and Business Owner
Police said Sipai created an elaborate fake identity to gain the trust of prospective victims.
On matrimonial platforms, he allegedly presented himself as an MBA graduate, an IT engineer and the owner of successful plastic manufacturing and construction businesses. To support these claims, he shared forged Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, driving licences, passports, GST-related documents and even a fabricated death certificate of a purported late wife named “Mittal.”
According to investigators, these documents helped him overcome background checks carried out by women during the early stages of interaction.
Targeted widows and divorcees seeking life partners
Crime Branch officials said Sipai carefully selected women who were emotionally vulnerable and actively searching for life partners.
To quickly establish trust and emotional intimacy, he allegedly claimed to be a childless widower living a lonely life after the death of his wife. Police believe this narrative helped him create a sense of emotional connection and present himself as an ideal match.
Victims reportedly remained in contact with him for months before discovering the alleged deception.
Money, gifts and even a two-wheeler taken
Once trust was established and marriage discussions had progressed, Sipai allegedly began seeking financial help from the women.
Police said he used various excuses, including business losses, financial emergencies and urgent personal needs, to obtain money and valuable assets from his victims.
One complainant told investigators that she transferred around ₹70,000 to him and also provided other assistance after believing his promises of marriage.
Authorities say a two-wheeler was also obtained from one of the victims.
Fraud exposed by caller identification app
The alleged scam began to unravel when one victim noticed a discrepancy during a routine phone call.
According to police, a caller-identification application displayed a name different from the one Sipai had been using. The woman subsequently verified the residential address he had provided in Gandhinagar and discovered that no such person lived there.
Further inquiries revealed that “Aditya Patel” was actually Karim Rafik Sipai.
After the victim approached police and filed a complaint, an FIR was registered and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch launched an investigation.

Bajrang Dal and VHP assisted in verification
Investigators said the complainant sought assistance from members of Bajrang Dal and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) after becoming suspicious.
Following verification of the accused’s identity, police were informed and a trap was allegedly laid to confirm his identity before he was taken into custody.
Subsequently, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested Sipai and began examining his digital devices.
Over 8,000 photos and videos found on phone
During a press conference, VHP and Bajrang Dal representatives claimed the accused maintained multiple fake matrimonial profiles across different platforms.
They further alleged that despite portraying himself as a childless widower, Sipai is actually married and has a 20-year-old son.
According to claims made during the briefing, investigators recovered more than 8,000 photographs and videos of different women from the accused’s mobile phone. The files were reportedly stored in around 20 separate folders.
Police are now conducting forensic examinations of the seized devices to determine how many women may have been targeted.
Investigation expands
Officials are analysing financial transactions, communication records and digital evidence to identify additional victims and establish the full scale of the alleged fraud.
Authorities are also examining whether similar complaints were made elsewhere and whether the accused operated multiple fake identities simultaneously on matrimonial websites.
Police have urged users of matrimonial and social networking platforms to independently verify personal claims, addresses and identity documents before making emotional or financial commitments.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further revelations are expected as forensic analysis of the accused’s devices continues.

Notably, daughters are increasingly becoming targets of sophisticated matrimonial frauds operating through online marriage platforms. In one such case, Kolkata Police recently arrested Matiur Rahman, who allegedly posed as “Manik Roy” on matrimonial websites and used a fake Hindu identity to lure Hindu women seeking life partners. Investigators say he projected himself as a wealthy and successful professional earning nearly Rs 1.5 crore annually, built emotional relationships with women and their families, promised marriage, and then began demanding money by citing medical emergencies, family crises and financial difficulties.
The fraud came to light after a woman from Naihati approached the police, claiming she had been persuaded to hand over Rs 85,000, a gold bracelet and other valuables after being promised marriage. Her suspicions arose when inconsistencies began appearing in the accused’s claims about his family and background. After sharing her experience on social media, she reportedly discovered several other women who described almost identical experiences. Investigators now suspect that at least 15 Hindu women may have been targeted using the same pattern of deception.

According to police, the victims narrated a similar sequence of events: contact through matrimonial websites, emotional bonding, promises of marriage, repeated financial demands and eventual disappearance once suspicions emerged. Some women have even alleged that marriage ceremonies were performed before they were allegedly cheated.
Authorities are now examining digital records, financial transactions and matrimonial profiles to determine the full scale of the operation and identify additional victims who may have been targeted through the scheme.
