“Those who sacrifice their lives for the motherland never die; they live forever in the hearts of the people.”

The history of India’s freedom struggle is filled with countless unsung heroes whose sacrifices have not received the recognition they deserve. Among them was Martyr Nanak Bhil, a courageous tribal revolutionary who dedicated his life to protecting the rights of farmers and forest communities and ultimately laid down his life while resisting British oppression.

Following the First World War, the British administration faced a severe financial crisis and sought to replenish its treasury through increased taxation and forced revenue collection from Indian farmers. British officials and soldiers frequently harassed and exploited rural communities, causing widespread resentment and resistance across the country.

In the Barad region of present-day Bundi district in Rajasthan, Nanak Bhil emerged as a prominent voice against these injustices. Born in the village of Dhaneshwar around 1890, he was the son of Bheru Bhil, who earned a living by collecting and selling forest produce. From an early age, Nanak Bhil displayed exceptional courage, leadership, and a strong sense of justice.

As he grew older, he developed close ties with young tribal and rural communities across the region. During this period, renowned social reformers and tribal leaders Govind Guru and Motilal Tejawat were mobilizing people against the exploitative policies of the British government. Inspired by their efforts, Nanak Bhil joined the movement and became one of its most energetic grassroots organizers.

Accompanied by a dedicated group of young supporters, he traveled from village to village and from market to market, spreading awareness through patriotic flag songs, public meetings, and speeches. A gifted folk singer, he used music as a powerful tool to awaken political consciousness among farmers and tribal communities. His message of unity and resistance quickly gained popularity throughout the region.

On June 13, 1923, a large farmers’ gathering was organised at Dabi. Nanak Bhil was addressing the assembly when British police forces suddenly surrounded the meeting. Panic spread among the crowd, but Nanak Bhil remained calm and fearless. Holding the movement’s flag high, he continued singing revolutionary songs and inspiring the people.

Enraged by his defiance, the British commander ordered his men to open fire. A soldier shot Nanak Bhil directly in the chest. He fell to the ground and attained martyrdom on the spot. His sacrifice became a symbol of courage and resistance for the farmers and tribal communities of the region.

Far from silencing the movement, his martyrdom strengthened it. News of his sacrifice spread rapidly across the tribal belt, intensifying public opposition to British revenue policies. Growing pressure from the people eventually compelled the colonial administration to modify certain revenue collection practices and reduce harsh measures against farmers whose crops had failed.

The area in which Nanak Bhil carried out his awareness campaigns today includes nearly thirteen Gram Panchayats of the Barad region. Following India’s independence, memorial statues were installed in Dhaneshwar and Barad to honor his sacrifice. Annual fairs and commemorative events continue to be organized in his memory, reflecting the enduring respect and gratitude of the people.

Nanak Bhil’s legacy extends beyond his role in the freedom struggle. He stands as a symbol of tribal pride, farmers’ rights, social justice, and resistance against oppression. His life reminds us that ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary things when they dedicate themselves to the welfare of society and the nation.

On his Martyrdom Day, the nation pays tribute to this brave son of India whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations in the pursuit of justice, dignity, and freedom.
