The mysterious death of a 19-year-old nursing student in Varanasi’s Sarnath area has taken a dramatic turn with the arrest of one Mohammad Sameer. Police allege that Sameer forced the student, who was around three months pregnant, to consume abortion pills, leading to excessive bleeding and her eventual death.
The victim, a second-year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) student, was found in a critical condition on the staircase of a boys’ hostel on Wednesday. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Purchased abortion pills watching YouTube videos
According to investigators, Mohammad Sameer allegedly procured abortion medication after watching videos on YouTube about terminating pregnancies.
Police claim that he subsequently pressured or forced the student to consume the pills despite the risks involved.
Following the consumption of the medication, the teen developed severe complications and began bleeding heavily.
Victim was three months pregnant
Investigators believe the student was approximately three months pregnant at the time of the incident.
Police are probing the nature of the relationship between the victim and Sameer and are examining digital evidence, call records, and witness statements to establish the sequence of events leading to her death.
Authorities allege that after taking the abortion pills, the student suffered excessive bleeding. She was later discovered on the staircase of a boys’ hostel building where she had reportedly gone to meet Sameer.
An electrician working in the building reportedly spotted her lying in distress and alerted others. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
Accused fled after incident
Police said Mohammad Sameer fled after the student’s condition deteriorated.
A search operation was launched to trace him, and he was subsequently arrested. Authorities are now questioning him regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged forced abortion and the events preceding the student’s death.
Sameer told during the interrogation that they had been in a relationship for two years. They used to travel together during holidays. One day, she told him that she was pregnant. An ultrasound confirmed it.
He said, “On Wednesday (June 10) morning at 9 AM, she reached the hostel with food for both of us from home. After coming into the room, she was scared and nervous. When asked to take the medicine, she refused. When pressured, she said, “Let’s get married,” but I didn’t listen to her. Against her will, I forcibly made her take the medicine.”
The dose of medicine was high. Bleeding started an hour later. Half an hour later, her condition worsened even more. She said, “Take me to the hospital.” Before I could say anything, she ran out of the room.
Sameer said, “blood was continuously flowing from her private part. The lift was closed due to a power outage. Because of this, she started going down the stairs. Then she felt dizzy due to bleeding and fell. I was scared seeing the blood. I came up to my room, locked it, and fled to my home in Jaunpur by bus.”
Investigators are analysing the accused’s mobile phone, internet search history, communication records, and other digital evidence. Medical reports, including postmortem findings, are also expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause of death.
Police have indicated that further charges may be added depending on forensic and medical evidence collected during the investigation.
Probe continues
The guard of the boys’ hostel said that the girl had been coming to the hostel continuously for the last two days. She had also come on Tuesday. She made three-four rounds from the grocery store on the road opposite to the tree inside the campus and wandered alone for a long time.
On Wednesday morning at 9:20 AM, she went straight to the room, climbing the stairs alone. Later, she was found covered in blood.
The case has sparked widespread concern and drawn attention to the dangers of unsupervised use of abortion medication.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the extent of Mohammad Sameer’s involvement.
