The issue has generated considerable attention in the region, with local residents, social organisations, and religious groups demanding a thorough investigation into the allegations. The controversy has also reignited the broader debate surrounding religious conversions, freedom of faith, and the implementation of anti-conversion laws in Himachal Pradesh.
Villagers File Complaints
According to complaints submitted to the Ghumarwin police, villagers from several localities have alleged that certain individuals approached them with offers of financial assistance in exchange for converting to Christianity.
Among the complainants is Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Havan village, who alleged that three individuals contacted him and his family and attempted to persuade them to embrace Christianity. He claimed that they offered a one-time payment of Rs 5 lakh along with a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000 if he agreed to renounce Hinduism and convert to Christianity.
Sandeep further alleged that after he rejected the proposal to embrace Christianity, the individuals made objectionable remarks about his Hindu faith. These claims form part of the written complaints that have reportedly been submitted to law enforcement authorities for investigation into the alleged conversion activities.
Another Family Raises Concerns
Another resident of the Havan area, Ravi Kumar, has alleged that his wife was converted to Christianity under similar circumstances. His complaint has added to growing concerns among villagers, many of whom are demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged Christian conversion network operating in the area.
Residents claim that efforts to persuade villagers to embrace Christianity had been taking place for some time before complaints were formally lodged. Following discussions within the community, multiple villagers reportedly decided to approach the police collectively and seek action against those allegedly involved.
Growing Public Outrage
News of the allegations has led to widespread anger among local residents. Villagers have organised meetings and awareness campaigns, urging authorities to take immediate action and determine whether any laws have been violated.
Many residents argue that vulnerable sections of society, particularly economically weaker families, should not be targeted through promises of financial assistance. They have demanded that any conversion conducted through coercion, misrepresentation, or inducement be investigated thoroughly. Community members have also emphasised the need to maintain social harmony and prevent communal tensions from escalating while the investigation is underway.
VHP Demands Strong Action
Leaders of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) have strongly condemned the alleged activities and called for strict legal action if the allegations are substantiated.
VHP representatives stated that Himachal Pradesh, often referred to as “Devbhoomi” because of its rich spiritual and religious heritage, should be protected from any attempts to alter its cultural fabric through unlawful means.
The organisation has urged the district administration and police authorities to examine all complaints carefully. It has also called for an investigation into possible financial networks behind the alleged activities, including whether any external or foreign funding may be involved.
