CM Suvendu Adhikari announces 125-ft Syama Prasad Mookerji statue in Kolkata on 125th birth anniversary
Kolkata: On the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a series of commemorative and development initiatives, including the construction of a 125-foot-tall statue, a memorial, and a library dedicated to the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. The initiatives are aimed at preserving Mookerjee’s legacy and highlighting his contributions to India’s political and cultural landscape.
Speaking at an organisational interaction programme with BJP workers in Dum Dum, Suvendu Adhikari stated that the West Bengal cabinet had given its approval for the proposed projects, which form part of the celebrations marking the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
“A 125-foot-tall statue, along with a memorial and a library dedicated to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, will be constructed on land acquired specifically for the project,” Adhikari said.
Adhikari said that Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Swami Pranavananda were instrumental in ensuring that West Bengal remained a part of the Indian Union during the 1947 Partition. He also alleged that successive governments had failed to give due recognition to their contributions and had sought to diminish their historical role.
“The story of West Bengal’s formation and the significant contributions made by Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Swami Pranavananda in shaping its future must always be remembered,” he said. Adhikari further announced that June 20 would henceforth be observed as West Bengal Day, replacing the earlier tradition of marking the state’s foundation day on Poila Baisakh.
Speaking about the broader vision of “Nabunirman” (reconstruction), Adhikari alleged that West Bengal’s progress had been hampered by 34 years of Left Front governance followed by 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule. He called on people from all sections of society to join the effort to rebuild and revitalise the state.
As part of efforts to enhance public outreach, Adhikari announced that welfare camps would be held across every block and municipality on June 15, 16, and 17, enabling citizens to access various government schemes and public services more easily.
Adhikari also announced that the state would officially observe International Yoga Day on June 21 for the first time. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate in the main event in Kolkata, while local leaders have been directed to organise yoga programmes across their respective regions in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ayush Ministry.
Speaking about civic administration in Bidhannagar, Adhikari said that an Additional District Magistrate had been appointed as the administrator of the municipal corporation on an interim basis. He also called on BJP workers to intensify their efforts and work towards securing victory for the party in the upcoming municipal elections.
Adhikari also launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress, alleging that the party’s political dominance was gradually weakening. He asserted that West Bengal was moving into a new phase marked by a stronger focus on development, administrative reforms, and recognition of its historical legacy.
