The historic fort of Raigad Fort is once again set to transform into a living theatre of history as Maharashtra prepares to mark the 353rd Shivrajyabhishek Sohala of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on June 5 and 6. It may have once been a ceremonial remembrance but has now evolved into a large-scale, state-supported cultural event, drawing lakhs of devotees, historians and tourists from across India and abroad.

A Festival Scaled to National Proportions
This year’s arrangement of the observation and celebration of the anniversary of the glorious epochal event viz. the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj a little over three and a half centuries ago is being positioned not merely as a regional celebration but as a “national folk festival”. The decision reflects the growing symbolic importance of Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation as a milestone in indigenous statecraft and self-rule.
Shivaji Maharaj's coronation on Jyeshta Shukla Trayodashi was the successful consummation of his efforts for an integral state. That is why we do not call this the anniversary of Shivaji’s Empire. We call it #HinduSamraajyaDiwas. pic.twitter.com/GRD2q1DYsg

The concept of marking June 6 as a civilisational assertion of sovereignty has gained traction, and the scale of preparations reflects that ambition.
The Maharashtra government, in coordination with district administration and the Akhil Bharatiya Shivrajyabhishek Mahotsav Samiti, has stepped up infrastructure, crowd management and ceremonial planning to handle what could be one of the largest gatherings in recent years.

40 Committees, One Massive Operation
At the core of the mega plan is a highly structured administrative model. Around 40 specialised committees have been deployed, each handling a critical function ranging from transport logistics and entry management and control to sanitation, medical services and communication systems, etc.
These committees have been stationed on the fort since June 1, working in shifts to ensure 24×7 readiness. Dedicated Helpdesks, Guidance Stalls, and emergency response units have been set up across key points such as the Maha Darwaja, Rajsadar and Jagdishwar Temple routes.

Infrastructure Push: Water, Sanitation and Access
With footfall expected to reach lakhs, the government has prioritised basic infrastructure. Temporary water distribution points, mobile toilets and sanitation and garbage clearance units have been significantly increased along the steep step route and plateau areas.
The 1,400-step climb from Pachad has undergone safety checks, including rockfall clearance near the Maha Darwaja – the massive gate entrance. Additional support railings, signage and volunteer assistance are being deployed to regulate movement and prevent bottlenecks.
For those unable to trek, the ropeway service remains operational, offering an alternative access route, particularly for elderly devotees.

Security and Disaster Management in Focus
Given the terrain and crowd density, authorities have adopted a multi-layered security approach. Police personnel, home guards and trained volunteers will be stationed at strategic points. Surveillance measures and crowd flow monitoring systems are being used to prevent overcrowding.
Medical preparedness has also been strengthened. First Aid Centres, ambulance services and emergency evacuation protocols have been put in place to handle contingencies ranging from dehydration to accidental injuries.
Traffic Management Alerts on Highway leading to Raigad
The Raigad district administration has imposed a temporary ban on the movement of heavy and oversized vehicles on sections of the Mumbai-Goa National Highway and key approach roads to Raigad Fort from 4 pm on June 5 to 10 pm on June 6 to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Shivrajyabhishek Ceremony 2026.

Raigad District Collector Kishan Jawale issued the notification in view of the massive influx of devotees expected to attend the two-day celebration at Raigad Fort. Lakhs of Shiv devotees from Raigad, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra are expected to visit the historic fort during the event. Private vehicles, police vehicles, milk, fuel, medicines, fire-fighting department vehicles, ambulances, oxygen trucks, etc. will however be allowed to pass.
Cultural Revival Meets Living History
Beyond logistics, the soul of the Sohala or the festive event lies in its cultural expression. Traditional shows, arts, skills, and sports such as Mardani Khel (traditional Indian martial arts or weapon-based folk combat forms) will be performed. Thunderous dhol-tasha rhythms, stirring powadas (Ballads of heroics of the warriors) and powerful shahiri performances will bring alive the spirit of the 1674 coronation.
A major boost to the grandeur of Raigad

The highlight remains the ceremonial rituals at the Rajsadar, including the abhishek (ritual anointing) of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s idol with suvarna mudra or gold coins, and the grand palkhi (palanquin) procession tracing key points across the fort. These are not mere performances but symbolic re-enactments of the original coronation ceremony.
A Historic First: Brass Toran at Maha Darwaja
One of the most talked-about additions this year is the installation of a massive brass toran (ornamental archway) at the Maha Darwaja. Measuring 12 feet in length, the intricately designed structure features traditional motifs like Ganapati, Swastik, peacock and parrot, along with inscriptions invoking Shivaji Maharaj’s royal titles.
“Few men may keep it from all the world!”

This installation is being seen as both an aesthetic and symbolic enhancement, reinforcing the grandeur of the Pravesh Dwaar from where thousands will enter during the celebrations.

This itinerary essentially recreates the coronation spirit of 1674, when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned at Raigad, blending ritual, military tradition and public participation into a living historical experience.
Participation Beyond Maharashtra
The event is no longer confined to Maharashtra. Groups from North India, often identifying as “Road Marathas”, are expected to travel from regions like Panipat and Delhi. The diaspora, too, is showing increasing interest, with international visitors planning to attend.
This widening participation underscores how Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy is being reclaimed as a pan-Indian narrative of resistance, governance and cultural pride.
An Appeal by the state administration
Authorities have urged attendees to adhere strictly to guidelines, maintain cleanliness and cooperate with volunteers. Given the expected rush, early arrival and disciplined movement are being emphasised.
As Raigad prepares to echo once again with the sounds of war Ran-Shinge (bugles) and Jayaghosha (resounding chants), the 2026 Shivrajyabhishek Sohala is shaping up not just as a commemoration, but as a powerful convergence of history, identity and collective memory.
