India’s civil aviation sector has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past decade, emerging as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world. From expanding airport infrastructure and regional connectivity to embracing cutting-edge digital technologies, the sector has undergone a sweeping modernisation aimed at making air travel affordable, accessible, and hassle-free for millions of Indians.

The latest milestone in this journey came on May 30, 2026, when the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that the Digi Yatra platform had crossed 10 crore passenger journeys, marking a significant achievement in India’s digital aviation revolution.

The achievement is more than a technological milestone. It reflects the rapid adoption of digital public infrastructure in aviation and highlights how India is preparing for a future where air travel volumes are expected to grow exponentially. With more than 2.4 crore downloads across Android and iOS platforms and operations currently active at 38 airports, Digi Yatra has emerged as one of the largest biometric passenger processing systems in the world.

Announcing the milestone, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said the achievement reflected the growing trust passengers are placing in seamless, paperless and contactless travel. He noted that India’s aviation sector is entering a phase of unprecedented expansion, making digital solutions indispensable for managing increasing passenger traffic.

The scale of this growth becomes evident when compared with the situation a decade ago. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, daily domestic passenger traffic, which averaged below 2 lakh passengers in 2014, has crossed the 5-lakh mark on numerous occasions over the last three years. Looking ahead, the government projects annual passenger traffic across Indian airports to reach 50 crore by 2030 and nearly 100 crore by 2040.

Managing such volumes requires not only physical infrastructure but also technological innovation. Digi Yatra has been designed precisely for this purpose.

The platform allows passengers to use facial recognition technology instead of repeatedly presenting physical identity documents and boarding passes. By creating a unique Digi Yatra ID linked to travel credentials, passengers can move through various airport checkpoints using biometric verification, significantly reducing waiting times and enhancing convenience.

According to official data, Digi Yatra has reduced average airport entry processing time from around 15 seconds to just 5 seconds per passenger. While the reduction may appear small at an individual level, the cumulative impact is substantial when millions of travellers pass through airports every month. Faster processing translates into shorter queues, smoother passenger movement, reduced congestion inside terminals, and greater operational efficiency for airport authorities.

The achievement of 10 crore journeys also shows a broader transformation in India’s aviation ecosystem under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. One of the most striking indicators of this change is the expansion of airport infrastructure across the country.

According to official government data, the number of operational airports in India nearly doubled from 74 in 2014 to 148 by 2023, representing one of the fastest expansions of aviation infrastructure in independent India. This growth has continued beyond 2023 with several new airports and aviation facilities becoming operational or nearing completion.

A key factor behind this expansion has been the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)-UDAN, launched in 2016 with the objective of making air travel affordable for ordinary citizens. The scheme, whose name translates to “Let the Common Citizen Fly,” has sought to connect smaller cities and remote regions to the national aviation network.

By 2023, 469 routes connecting 74 airports had been operationalised under UDAN. The initiative has brought commercial aviation to regions that previously relied almost entirely on lengthy road and rail journeys. Smaller towns that were once disconnected from the aviation map are now linked to major economic centres, improving access to healthcare, education, tourism, and business opportunities.

The rapid growth of air travel in India has also created new challenges. Airports today handle significantly higher passenger volumes than they did a decade ago. Long queues at entry gates, security checkpoints, and boarding gates can quickly become bottlenecks in a high-growth environment. Digi Yatra has emerged as one of the government’s key solutions to address these challenges.

The platform is based on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision technology. Passengers opting for Digi Yatra complete a one-time registration process to create a unique digital identity. This identity is linked with their travel details, allowing the system to verify passengers through facial recognition at various checkpoints within the airport.

The technology works by analysing distinct facial features such as the distance between the eyes, the shape of facial landmarks, and measurements between the forehead and chin. These characteristics are converted into a unique mathematical representation known as a facial signature, which is then used for identity verification.

Once authenticated, passengers can move through designated e-gates without repeatedly producing physical documents. This creates a seamless travel experience while reducing physical contact and manual verification procedures.

The concept gained momentum during and after the COVID-19 pandemic when governments and airport authorities worldwide began exploring contactless travel technologies. India initiated the Digi Yatra project after extensive testing and pilot implementation. The first phase covered airports such as Varanasi, Pune, Kolkata, and Vijayawada. Following positive results, the programme was expanded across the country and is now operational at 38 airports.

The government has ambitious plans for further expansion. According to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, 27 additional airports will be integrated with Digi Yatra over the next year. Furthermore, major greenfield airports expected to become operational in the near future—including Navi Mumbai International Airport, Noida International Airport at Jewar, and Bhogapuram International Airport—will be fully Digi Yatra-enabled from the outset.

The rapid scale-up has attracted attention globally. While several countries continue to evaluate large-scale biometric passenger processing systems, India has successfully operationalised the technology across dozens of airports within a relatively short period. The scale and speed of adoption have positioned Digi Yatra among the most extensive biometric aviation programmes currently in operation.

Beyond convenience, the government has emphasised security and privacy as core elements of the platform. Digi Yatra follows a “privacy by design” framework under which passenger data remains encrypted and stored on the user’s own device. Information is shared only temporarily with the departure airport for verification purposes and is not retained indefinitely in a central repository.

Officials argue that this approach strikes a balance between efficiency and privacy while ensuring secure passenger processing.

The platform also contributes to environmental sustainability. By reducing reliance on printed boarding passes and paper-based verification processes, Digi Yatra helps save thousands of sheets of paper every day across participating airports. These savings may appear modest individually but become significant when multiplied across millions of passenger journeys annually.

The aviation sector’s broader sustainability efforts are also gaining momentum. Airports such as Delhi and Mumbai have received international recognition for their carbon reduction initiatives, while the Airports Authority of India has developed a roadmap to transition operational airports toward 100 percent renewable energy usage. Such initiatives are increasingly important as India seeks to balance rapid aviation growth with environmental responsibility.

Digi Yatra forms part of a larger digital modernization programme underway in Indian aviation. Alongside biometric travel, the government has introduced self-baggage drop facilities, upgraded air traffic control automation systems, AI-powered digital twins for airport management, and the AirSewa platform for passenger grievance redressal. These initiatives collectively aim to create a more efficient and passenger-friendly aviation ecosystem.

The government is also focusing on inclusivity. Digi Yatra currently supports 11 languages, making the platform accessible to travellers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The Ministry of Civil Aviation plans to add 11 more regional languages by the end of the year, further expanding accessibility and supporting the broader vision of democratizing air travel.

The significance of Digi Yatra’s 10-crore milestone lies not merely in the number itself but in what it represents. It reflects the convergence of Digital India initiatives, airport infrastructure expansion, regional connectivity programmes, and growing public acceptance of technology-driven services.

A decade ago, India’s aviation landscape was defined by limited airport infrastructure, lower passenger volumes, and largely manual passenger processing systems. Today, the country has nearly doubled its airport network, connected remote regions through UDAN, increased daily passenger traffic to record levels, and introduced advanced biometric technologies that are reshaping the airport experience.

As India moves toward becoming a global aviation powerhouse, digital solutions such as Digi Yatra are expected to play an increasingly central role in managing growth. With annual passenger traffic projected to touch 50 crore by 2030 and nearly 100 crore by 2040, the need for seamless, secure, and scalable airport operations will only become more pressing.

The crossing of the 10-crore Digi Yatra journeys milestone is therefore not simply a technological achievement. It is a symbol of India’s broader aviation transformation, one that seeks to combine infrastructure, innovation, accessibility, sustainability, and digital governance to create an aviation ecosystem capable of serving the aspirations of a rapidly growing nation.
