Abohar, Punjab: In a significant political development in Punjab, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Abohar Municipal Corporation elections, winning 28 out of 50 wards and obtaining a clear majority in the civic body. The result marks one of the BJP’s most notable performances in the state’s urban local body elections and reinforces its presence in the border region of Punjab.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which currently governs Punjab, emerged as the second-largest party with 20 seats, while the Congress and an Independent candidate won one seat each. The outcome enables the BJP to form the municipal corporation administration independently.
The result is being viewed by party leaders and political observers as an endorsement of the BJP’s local leadership and organisational strength in the region.
BJP leaders stated that the mandate reflects the trust reposed by citizens in the party’s vision for local governance and development.
The Abohar result also stands out in the broader context of Punjab’s municipal elections, where electoral contests witnessed intense competition among major political parties. With a comfortable majority in the corporation, the BJP is expected to play a decisive role in shaping Abohar’s urban development agenda in the coming years.
The victory is likely to boost the party’s morale as Punjab’s political landscape gradually moves towards future electoral contests.
According to the Punjab State Election Commission, the AAP won 957 of the total 1,977 wards, with the Congress at second spot with 397. Independents occupied the third position by winning 251 wards, followed by the Shiromani Akali Dal with 191 wards, and the BJP with 172 wards. The Bahujan Samaj Party won seven wards.
Elections to the 102 municipal bodies, comprising 1,897 wards across eight municipal corporations of Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala and Pathankot along with 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats were held on May 26. Candidates in 80 wards were elected unopposed.
