In a shocking and dreadful incident, an Indian student from the state of Gujarat has been stabbed to death in the Niagara region of Canada. The victim was identified as a 22 year-old young woman Vidhi Megha who is studying law in Canada and hailed from the Anand district of Gujarat. She was living in Canada for the past four years and intended to build a professional life in the country.

As per the preliminary investigations by the police, the Indian student was stabbed to death in broad daylight. She sustained fatal injuries and local residents rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, the doctors declared her dead upon arrival to the hospital. The tragic news has left the entire town of Borsad, in the Anand district of Gujarat in grief and pain, the hometown of Vidhi Megha.

As per the local authorities, Vidhi Megha was pursuing higher studies in law and was also working part-time to support her family in Borsad. She was also aiming to apply for Permanent Residency in Canada and intended to build a strong career and life in the country. However, on May 15, she was stabbed to death by unknown men, as she stepped out of the house in the Niagara region.

However, the family of Vidhi Megha was unaware of the incident for several days. They didn’t know her whereabouts. The relatives in the hometown said that they were unable to contact or speak to her since May 16. Initially the family and the relatives assumed that Vidhi Megha might be preoccupied with her work and studies, thus not accessible for calls. However, they received information about her death when local police and Canadian officials contacted via diplomatic channels.

Initial reports by the police said that the attacker might have stabbed Vidhi to death during an attempted robbery. Authorities have arrested one suspect and the detailed investigations are underway. However, the exact motive behind the attack is yet to be identified. Meanwhile, the friends and colleagues of Vidhi described her as hard working, ambitious and expressed intense grief over the sudden death of a young woman who aspired to build a bright future in Canada. Also, arrangements are being made for the repatriation of Vidhi’s body to India.

Meanwhile, relatives and friends of Vidhi Megha in the hometown of Borsad and the larger Indian community have raised serious concerns over the safety of the Indian students studying abroad. The incidents of attack on the Indian students have been repeatedly spiking across Canada, the United States, London and other major hubs where Indian students are in large numbers. Selective assault, racist comments, robbery and other violent crimes targeting the Indian students and others from the Indian diaspora has been repeatedly being reported from across the globe.

Recently, a student from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, died as he suffered from severe assault in British Colombia’s Fort St. John. He was attacked by a group of 10-12 people while returning from work and his body was later run over by a vehicle. As per the government sources, between 2018 and 2025, in Canada alone, 17 Indian students lost their lives as victims of targeted violence.
