West Bengal: BJP govt launches Rs 5 fish-and-rice meals across 400 canteens to strengthen Bengali cultural identity

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced Rs 5 fish-and-rice meals at 400 government-run canteens across the state, in a major welfare and cultural outreach initiative by the BJP government. The move is being seen as a strong message reaffirming the government’s support for Bengal’s traditional food culture while expanding affordable meal schemes for the poor and working class

Kolkata: In a major welfare and cultural outreach initiative, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on May 22 announced that fish-and-rice meals would be provided for just Rs 5 at state government-run canteens across the state.

Addressing an administrative meeting in Kalyani, Adhikari said the subsidised meal scheme would be introduced in nearly 400 dedicated canteens to ensure affordable and nutritious food for the poor, daily wage workers, labourers and economically weaker sections.

The announcement is being viewed as a major step by the BJP government to reinforce its commitment to Bengal’s cultural identity, where fish and rice remain an inseparable part of everyday life.

BJP Reaffirms Respect for Bengali Food Culture

The move comes months after the high-voltage Assembly election campaign in West Bengal, during which several leaders of the All India Trinamool Congress attempted to spread fears that the BJP would impose restrictions on fish, meat and eggs if it came to power in the state. However, BJP leaders repeatedly rejected such allegations and assured the people of Bengal that the party fully respects Bengali traditions, customs and food habits.

Senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur had publicly stated during the campaign that BJP governments across the country have never imposed restrictions on people’s food choices, worship or cultural practices.

To further connect with Bengali sentiments, several BJP leaders participated in traditional “maach-bhaat” feasts and public gatherings celebrating Bengal’s culinary heritage. Political observers say the new Rs 5 fish-and-rice scheme sends a strong message that the BJP government stands firmly with Bengal’s cultural identity while also prioritising welfare measures for ordinary citizens.

Expansion of Subsidised Meal Network

Subsidised meal schemes have remained popular among working-class communities in West Bengal for years. Under the new BJP government, the canteen network is being expanded, with a special focus on including fish curry, a staple in Bengali households.

The canteens are expected to operate in the afternoon and provide affordable cooked meals to thousands of people every day. Government officials say the initiative is aimed at helping low-income families cope with rising food prices while ensuring access to hygienic and nutritious meals at minimal cost.

Welfare and Cultural Outreach Combined

The BJP government’s decision is being seen as both a welfare initiative and a cultural outreach programme designed specifically around Bengal’s traditions and lifestyle.

Fish occupies a unique place in Bengali society and cuisine, symbolising not just food habits but also cultural identity and heritage. By launching subsidised fish-and-rice meals across the state, the government appears keen to strengthen its grassroots connection with the people of Bengal. The initiative could emerge as one of the flagship welfare programmes of the new BJP government in the state, especially among urban workers, labourers and economically weaker communities. The announcement also reflects the BJP government’s focus on combining welfare measures with Bengal’s regional cultural identity while expanding its connect across the state.
