LUCKNOW: Amid Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s intensified crackdown on illegal land occupation and disputed property claims, more than 31,000 Waqf property registrations in Uttar Pradesh have been deleted from the Centre’s Umeed portal after a verification process uncovered serious inconsistencies in documents, land details, and ownership records submitted during registration. Officials said that entries linked to 31,328 Waqf properties have been cancelled so far. In addition, claims associated with 31,192 properties were rejected after authorities found mismatches during scrutiny of official records.
The action taken by the Yogi government is part of an extensive review which is being carried out across Uttar Pradesh to verify Waqf property data uploaded on the digital portal. Authorities stated that Uttar Pradesh currently has around 1,18,302 recorded Waqf properties, many of which are undergoing examination.
During the verification exercise, officials reportedly identified several irregularities in the documents submitted for registration. In many cases, the Khasra and plot numbers mentioned by applicants did not correspond with details available in government revenue records or records maintained by the Waqf Board. Authorities also found differences in the land area mentioned in various documents which led to doubts over the legitimacy and accuracy of several property claims. Following these findings, registrations deemed incorrect or unsupported were removed from the portal.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a strong warning against illegal occupation of government land in the state. Referring to encroachments on the public property, he reportedly said that those who have occupied government land should vacate it immediately within 24 hours. CM Yogi further warned that after the deadline, not only would the encroached land be reclaimed by the administration, but any earnings or financial gains made through illegal occupation would also be recovered with interest.
The Umeed portal i.e., Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development was introduced by the Centre to digitise and geotag Waqf properties across India. It was to build a transparent and centralised database of Waqf assets while improving, monitoring and reducing disputes related to its ownership and management. Under the guidelines, all Waqf properties are required to be uploaded on the portal within six months of its launch. The digitisation process has become a major subject of legal and political discussion, especially after changes introduced in Waqf-related regulations.
The Centre has consistently said that the digital verification process is intended to bring greater transparency, prevent misuse of Waqf land, and ensure proper record management. As per sources, the scrutiny of records is still underway in multiple districts, and additional properties may come under review in the coming days. Recently, the Supreme Court of India also declined requests seeking an extension of the deadline for uploading property records on the portal. The court noted that parties that are facing documentation or technical issues can seek remedies before Waqf Tribunals individually.
