A shocking murder case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, where a 25-year-old nurse was allegedly strangled to death by her former colleague, who had reportedly been pressuring her to marry him despite knowing she was already married and had a child. Police have arrested the accused’s sister and one of his associates, while the main accused, identified as Sufiyan, remains absconding.
The victim, Anjali Sharma, worked as a contractual nurse at a medical college in Meerut. Investigators say the accused had allegedly been harassing her for a long time and was repeatedly pressuring her to leave her family, marry him and convert to Islam.
Nurse left home for duty but never reached hospital
According to police, Anjali Sharma left her residence in Jagriti Vihar on the morning of May 21 at around 11 am to report for duty at the medical college where she worked.
However, she never reached the hospital.
Investigators later discovered that Sufiyan allegedly took her to a rented room in Meerut’s Lohiya Nagar area. Police believe a heated argument broke out between the two inside the room.
Officials suspect that during the confrontation, Sufiyan once again pressured Anjali regarding marriage and religious conversion, leading to a violent altercation.
According to police, the accused allegedly strangled Anjali to death using a rope or cloth.
Police said Sufiyan’s sister, Sajida, was also present during the incident.
SP City Vinayak Gopal Bhosale said preliminary investigation revealed that the confrontation took place between Anjali, Sufiyan and Sajida at the Lohiya Nagar location on Thursday morning.
“During the altercation, the accused allegedly strangled her to death,” the officer said.
Body dumped outside emergency ward
Police said that after the murder, the accused attempted to dispose of the body in a calculated manner.
Investigators stated that Sufiyan and his sister Sajida placed Anjali’s body inside an e-rickshaw and transported it to the medical college itself.
According to police, the e-rickshaw driver was told that the woman was seriously ill and needed urgent medical treatment.
Around 1 pm, Sajida allegedly abandoned the body outside the emergency ward of the hospital before fleeing the spot.
Doctors later examined the woman and declared her dead, triggering panic within the medical college premises.
After the victim’s identity was confirmed, her family members were informed about the incident.
Anjali’s brother, Pradeep, immediately suspected foul play and alerted the police, following which a detailed investigation was launched.
CCTV footage and questioning helped police crack case
Police said CCTV footage from nearby areas and local intelligence inputs played a crucial role in tracing the movement of the accused.
Investigators first detained Sajida, who allegedly confessed during interrogation to helping her brother transport and dump the body outside the hospital.
Police later arrested one of Sufiyan’s friends, identified as Jabar Singh, in connection with the case.
However, the main accused continues to remain on the run.
SP City Bhosale said multiple police teams have been formed and raids are being conducted at different locations to trace Sufiyan.
“The main accused will be arrested soon,” he said.
Police probing allegations of harassment and pressure for conversion
According to media reports and police sources, Sufiyan and Anjali had known each other for a long time after working together at the medical college, where he was employed as a ward attendant.
Police sources said the two remained in contact even after Sufiyan lost his job.
Investigators also revealed that the two used to meet regularly at a rented room in Lohiya Nagar.
Neighbours reportedly informed police that frequent arguments had taken place between the two in recent days, including another heated altercation on the morning of the incident.
Family members and reports allege that Sufiyan had been repeatedly pressuring Anjali to marry him despite her existing marriage and five-year-old son.
Some reports further claim that he was also forcing her to convert to Islam.
Police are examining all aspects of the allegations as part of the ongoing investigation.
Victim was married and living separately due to family issues
Anjali Sharma had married Sunny, a resident of Meerut’s Sector-8 locality, in 2018.
The couple had a five-year-old son.
Police said that due to family-related issues, Anjali had been living with her brother for nearly a year before the incident.
Her sudden death has left the family devastated, while the incident has triggered outrage in the area.
Police have registered a case under serious sections related to murder and criminal conspiracy, and further investigation is currently underway.
