Gothenburg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a vibrant cultural welcome in Sweden’s industrial hub of Gothenburg on Sunday, with Indian traditions, music and dance taking centre stage as members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with enthusiasm and warmth during the latest leg of his five-nation tour.
The atmosphere outside the hotel where the Prime Minister is staying turned festive as crowds waving Indian tricolours gathered to welcome him.
Women dressed in traditional attire performed lively Bengali cultural dances and rituals, including elements reminiscent of aarti and folk traditions rooted in Bengal’s cultural heritage. The performances blended Indian cultural expressions with the Scandinavian backdrop, creating a colourful display of diaspora pride. Sharing glimpses of the welcome on X, PM Modi praised the cultural presentation and highlighted the global popularity of Bengali traditions.
“Bengali culture is popular world over and Sweden is no exception. During the community welcome, in which PM Kristersson was also present, a glimpse of the glorious Bengali culture was on display,” he wrote. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson joined the Indian leader during the community reception, underlining the significance attached to the visit by both countries.

Bengali folk traditions and Bharatanatyam enthrall audience
Alongside the Bengali folk performances, PM Modi also witnessed a Bharatanatyam presentation by students of Lilla Akademien during the cultural welcome programme. The classical dance performance drew appreciation from the Prime Minister, who said the Indian diaspora in Sweden was helping preserve and popularise Indian culture abroad. “A mesmerising Bharatanatyam performance by the talented students of Lilla Akademien…glad that Indian culture is kept alive and is being popularised by our diaspora in Sweden,” PM Modi posted on X while sharing visuals from the event.
The cultural reception further featured an Indo-Swedish Musical Orchestra presentation by Ron Davis Alvarez and his students. PM Modi and PM Kristersson watched the performance together as musicians blended Indian and Swedish musical influences.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Prime Minister was welcomed with additional cultural performances soon after arriving in Sweden from the Netherlands. Swedish opera singer Charlotta Huldt performed the devotional hymn ‘Vaishnava Jana To’, closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi, during the ceremonial welcome in Gothenburg.
PM Modi said it was heartening to witness Gandhian ideals resonating in Sweden through music and cultural expression. “It is heartening to see the timeless thoughts of Bapu continue to reverberate in Sweden. Swedish opera singer Charlotta Huldt sang ‘Vaishnava Jana To’ during the welcome in Gothenburg. May Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts inspire us all to make a better planet!” he posted on X.
Diaspora connect and India-Sweden ties
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude towards the Indian community in Gothenburg for the warm reception and said their connection with India continued to strengthen ties between the two countries. “The warmth and affection of the Indian community in Gothenburg were truly heartening. Their deep connection with India and their contribution to strengthening India-Sweden ties make us all very proud,” he said.

PM Modi arrived in Sweden after concluding his visit to the Netherlands, where India and the Netherlands elevated bilateral ties to the level of a strategic partnership. PM Kristersson personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport upon his arrival in Gothenburg. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two Prime Ministers are expected to review the entire gamut of India-Sweden bilateral relations during the visit and explore new avenues of cooperation aimed at enhancing trade and strategic collaboration. The two leaders are also scheduled to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry, a leading pan-European business forum, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
While diplomacy and trade remain central to the visit, the opening moments of PM Modi’s Sweden tour were dominated by cultural symbolism, diaspora participation and artistic performances celebrating India’s traditions on an international stage. The blend of Bengali folk culture, Bharatanatyam, orchestral collaborations and Gandhian devotional music reflected the expanding cultural footprint of the Indian diaspora in Europe and showcased how Indian traditions continue to resonate far beyond the country’s borders.
