Keralites await clarity over who will lead the next government, and the suspense finally ends with the Congress high command naming V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the previous Assembly and the face of the UDF campaign, as the next Chief Minister. Despite strong competition from senior Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and K.C. Venugopal — both politically senior to Satheesan — the Congress leadership ultimately backs Satheesan amid sustained support from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key ally in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
What happened today? – Time line
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) formally announces the decision at a press conference held at 12:03 pm on May 14. Senior Congress leaders Jayaram Ramesh, Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik and Deepa Das Munshi address the media, with Deepa Das Munshi declaring Satheesan as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
The announcement follows dramatic developments in Delhi since early morning. Rahul Gandhi holds a two-hour meeting with K.C. Venugopal, while Jayaram Ramesh separately meets Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Simultaneously, arrangements are made for AICC observers Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik and Deepa Das Munshi to travel to Thiruvananthapuram on a chartered flight. Venugopal’s absence from the travel list fuels speculation that he is no longer in contention for the top post.
Ramesh Chennithala reportedly receives a call from Delhi amid efforts to pacify senior leaders disappointed by the final decision. IUML state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal also receives communication from the Congress leadership, though the League refrains from making any public statement before the official declaration.
The Muslim League leadership, which meets in Malappuram on May 13, strongly backed Satheesan’s candidature, arguing that he leads the UDF campaign that delivers a decisive electoral victory. The numbers in the 140-member Assembly further strengthen the League’s bargaining power. The UDF secures 102 seats, including 63 for the Congress and 22 for the IUML, making the League indispensable to the coalition government.
Political observers also point to the Congress leadership’s dependence on the Muslim League in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The constituency includes seven Assembly segments spread across Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, several of which are politically influenced by the League. Congress strategists believe antagonising the IUML at this stage could destabilise the coalition and weaken the party’s prospects in northern Kerala.
On May 13, provocative posters surface in parts of Wayanad carrying warnings directed at the Congress leadership and Priyanka Gandhi. The posters read: “WAYANAD WILL BE NEXT AMETHI … WE ARE DONE, WE WILL FINISH YOU … DON’T CLIMB UP WAYANAD HIGH RANGE FOR SECURE SEAT.” The appearance of the posters intensifies political discussions over the Congress party’s dependence on its allies in Kerala.
Meanwhile, ideological debates surrounding Satheesan’s rise continue to dominate political discourse. Critics within the BJP and Sangh Parivar accuse Satheesan of maintaining a soft stance toward Islamist organisations and minority political groupings. His past remarks on Jamaat-e-Islami, as well as his criticism of the RSS and Hindutva organisations, are repeatedly cited by opponents. Political rivals also point to his positions on issues involving the Popular Front of India (PFI), SDPI and Abdul Nasser Madani’s PDP.
Supporters, however, project Satheesan as a modern coalition builder capable of uniting diverse social and political groups under the UDF umbrella. They argue that his leadership style and aggressive opposition politics since 2021 help revive the Congress-led alliance after years of internal factionalism.
Satheesan begins his political journey through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress, before rising through the ranks of the Youth Congress and later the party organisation. He represents the Paravur Assembly constituency continuously since 2001. Academically, he holds degrees in Master of Social Work (MSW) and LLM.
