A major controversy erupted in Bhopal after hundreds of Islamists assembled outside the Police Commissionerate, raising extremist slogans such as “Sar Tan Se Juda”, a phrase widely associated with violent Islamist intimidation and threats against individuals accused of blasphemy or criticism of Islam.
Videos circulating on social media showed sections of the crowd shouting religious slogans including “Nara-e-Takbeer” and “Allah-u-Akbar”, while some participants issued open threats against members of Hindu organisations, particularly the Bajrang Dal.

The protest reportedly followed an incident at a hotel in the Govindpura area where Hindu activists confronted a Muslim man and a Hindu woman staying together. Activists alleged that the man had concealed his identity and suspected a possible “Love Jihad” angle, though police have not officially confirmed such allegations.
AIMIM leader accused of provocative speech
During the protest outside the Police Commissionerate, state president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Mohsin Ali Khan was alleged by critics to have delivered inflammatory speeches that further intensified tensions.
According to videos and eyewitness accounts shared online, one speaker from the gathering declared, “Muslims of Bhopal will no longer tolerate them. We will drag them to the streets and lynch them… If we came to catch your girls, we would beat them on roads… Wherever I find them, I will thrash them. I take full responsibility.”
The speech was followed by loud religious chants from the crowd.

Another viral clip showed a man standing atop a police barricade near officers and shouting provocative slogans including “Tera Mera Rishta Kya…”, drawing criticism over the apparent lack of immediate police intervention despite the charged atmosphere.
Massive gathering at Imami Gate raises concerns
Apart from the Commissionerate protest, another large gathering reportedly assembled at Imami Gate, where crowds were seen raising loud religious slogans late into the evening.
The scale of mobilisation and the openly aggressive rhetoric used by several participants have raised concerns among residents and political observers over the increasing normalisation of extremist street intimidation in communally sensitive situations.

What happened at the hotel?
The protests stemmed from an incident that took place inside a hotel in Bhopal on Sunday evening.
According to reports, local Hindu activists reached the hotel after receiving information that a Muslim man and a Hindu woman were staying there together under suspicious circumstances. Activists reportedly questioned the man over allegations that he was using a fake identity while interacting with the woman.
The situation soon escalated into a confrontation. Videos from the scene showed the man being publicly humiliated and assaulted before being handed over to police. His face was smeared with ink and cow dung during the altercation.
Police later identified the man as 27-year-old Arif Khan from Jahangirabad.
The Hindu woman involved reportedly informed police that she had willingly been in a live-in relationship with Arif for several years and denied allegations of coercion or forced conversion. She declined to file a complaint.
However, police investigation also revealed that Arif Khan had multiple criminal cases registered against him, including allegations related to fraud, theft and criminal breach of trust across different police stations in Bhopal. Officials said several court matters against him remain pending.
Govindpura police station officials stated that since no formal complaint was filed by either side, no immediate criminal case was registered in connection with the hotel confrontation. Authorities claimed all parties were counselled and released after warnings to maintain communal harmony.
Debate over radicalisation and street mobilisation
While the hotel incident itself generated controversy and criticism, the developments that followed, particularly open “Sar Tan Se Juda” sloganeering and public threats of lynching, have now become the larger focus of public attention.
The violent rhetoric delivered openly in front of police personnel shows a dangerous pattern of radical mobilisation and intimidation in the name of religious outrage. Others have questioned whether authorities would have reacted differently had similar slogans been raised by groups from another community.
The incident has once again reignited discussions around interfaith relationships, identity concealment allegations, communal polarisation, and the challenge authorities face in preventing street radicalisation from spiralling into violence.
