NEW DELHI: Fresh security concerns have gripped Punjab after twin explosions rocked Jalandhar and Amritsar within hours of each other, prompting the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to step in and assist local authorities. According to officials, the first incident took place around 8 pm near the headquarters of the Border Security Force (BSF) Punjab Frontier in Jalandhar. A loud explosion-like sound triggered panic in the area, damaging a parked scooter, a traffic signal pole, and nearby shop windows. The scooter, reportedly belonging to a delivery worker identified as Gurpreet Singh, caught fire following the blast.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur stated that the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. “It is too early to confirm whether it was a deliberate blast,” she said, adding that forensic teams are examining the site for evidence. CCTV footage from the area has captured a plume of smoke and a person running away moments after the incident, a clue investigators are now closely analysing.
Sources within the Punjab Police indicated that terrorist outfit, the Khalistan Liberation Army (KLA), has claimed responsibility for the Jalandhar blast. Officials are also probing a possible link to Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti, though no confirmation has been made so far.
Approximately three hours later, a second explosion was reported near the Khasa cantonment area in Amritsar at around 10:50 pm. The blast prompted an immediate response from local police, army personnel, and bomb disposal squads. Senior police officer Aditya S. Warrier said that forensic samples have been collected and sent for analysis to determine the nature of the explosive used.
Preliminary findings suggest that an explosive object may have been hurled at a boundary wall, causing structural damage. CCTV visuals from the site reportedly captured the moment of the blast, while residents in the vicinity said the loud noise jolted them awake late at night.
Despite the intensity of the incidents, no casualties have been reported in either blast. However, both locations remain under tight security, with additional forces deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. Bomb disposal units, dog squads, and forensic teams continue to comb the sites for evidence.
The back-to-back explosions have triggered a sharp political reaction in the state. Opposition leaders have criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government, alleging a deterioration in law and order. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of failing to ensure security in the sensitive border region.

Congress leaders also raised concerns over the timing and nature of the blasts. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said that two explosions within a few hours could not be dismissed as coincidence and called for a thorough investigation. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring described the incidents as “deeply alarming” and demanded accountability.
With central and state agencies now working in coordination, officials say all angles—including terror links, cross-border involvement, and local networks—are being examined. The NIA’s involvement is expected to bring additional technical expertise and resources to the probe.
As forensic and intelligence inputs continue to be analysed, authorities have urged the public to remain calm while maintaining vigilance.
