In the wake of rising post-poll violence in West Bengal, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday (May 6) issued a strong warning, directing authorities to take strict and immediate action against those involved in violence and vandalism.
The directive comes after multiple incidents surfaced following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) significant victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections. Reports indicate attacks, arson, and vandalism targeting party offices and workers in several districts.
“Those inciting violence and engaging in vandalism will be arrested immediately,” the CEC stated, underlining a zero-tolerance approach.
Taking serious note of the deteriorating law and order situation, Gyanesh Kumar directed all key administrative and police officials to ensure round-the-clock vigilance.
The order includes:
1. District Magistrates (DMs) across all districts
2. Superintendents of Police (SPs)
3. Chief Secretary of West Bengal
4. Director General of Police (DGP)
5. Kolkata Police Commissioner
6. Directors General of Central Armed Police Forces
All officials have been instructed to maintain continuous patrolling to prevent further escalation of violence and ensure public safety.
Post-poll violence incidents surface across state
The order comes in response to a series of violent incidents reported after the election results were declared on May 4. Allegations of clashes between political workers, destruction of property, and targeted attacks have emerged from different parts of the state.
While initial reports suggest that several incidents are linked to BJP workers, the situation remains tense with accusations and counter-accusations from both sides.
The political atmosphere in West Bengal has remained highly charged following the BJP’s electoral success, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
The aftermath has seen heightened tensions on the ground, with both ruling and opposition parties accusing each other of orchestrating violence.
The Election Commission’s intervention is being viewed as a critical step to restore order and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Focus on law and order as state remains on edge
With reports of violence continuing to trickle in, the emphasis is now on strict law enforcement and rapid response mechanisms. Continuous patrolling and swift arrests are expected to act as deterrents against further unrest.
Authorities are closely monitoring sensitive areas, and additional central forces may be deployed if required.
