Bengaluru : A sudden spell of intense rain accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorm triggered a major tragedy in Bengaluru on  Wednesday (April 19) evening, claiming seven lives, including two children, after a compound wall collapsed near the emergency wing of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar.

The incident occurred following nearly 30 minutes of heavy rainfall that lashed parts of the city after a day of extreme heat. What initially appeared to be a brief downpour quickly turned destructive, exposing the vulnerability of ageing infrastructure and crowded public spaces.

According to officials, the collapse happened when an approximately eight-foot-high compound wall gave way under the pressure of rain and strong winds.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos. “People rushed under the tarpaulin to escape the rain. Within seconds, the wall collapsed, trapping many underneath,” said a local resident who was present at the spot.

The victims included roadside vendors operating pushcarts and footpath stalls outside the hospital. Authorities confirmed that two children were among those killed. Seven others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Officials said the condition of the injured is stable.

Local residents and passersby immediately began rescue efforts, pulling out victims from under the debris before emergency teams arrived. Police, fire personnel, and disaster response teams later intensified the rescue operation amid fears that more people could have been trapped.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the accident site and inspected the situation. Expressing shock and grief, he announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and directed officials to provide free treatment to the injured.

Addressing the media, Siddaramaiah said, “Seven people, including two children, have lost their lives in this tragic incident. I have instructed that the injured be given free treatment. A detailed inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse.”

The heavy rain caused widespread disruption across Bengaluru, with more than 50 trees uprooted in various parts of the city, according to civic authorities. A large tree fell near Kempegowda Railway Station, damaging several vehicles. Waterlogging and traffic congestion were reported in multiple areas.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain accountability in the wall collapse that led to the loss of innocent lives.

The rain, which lasted barely  two hours , was intense enough to overwhelm stormwater drains and flood several neighbourhoods. Areas such as Shivajinagar, KR Market, Majestic surroundings, and parts of East Bengaluru witnessed knee-deep water, disrupting normal life and leaving commuters stranded.
