Chennai, April 23, 2026: In a historic electoral development, Tamil Nadu has recorded its highest-ever voter turnout since Independence, with an impressive 84.69% participation in the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The polling, which commenced at 7:00 AM across the state’s 234 Assembly Constituencies, witnessed enthusiastic participation from voters across demographics, surpassing the previous highest turnout of 78.29% recorded in the 2011 Assembly elections.

Strong Participation Across Categories

Male voters: 83.57%

Female voters: 85.76%

Third gender voters: 60.49%

Overall turnout: 84.69%

Officials noted that female voter participation outpaced male turnout, continuing a growing trend of higher electoral engagement among women in the state.

Massive Electoral Exercise

Tamil Nadu’s election machinery operated at a large scale:

Total Assembly Constituencies: 234

Total Electorate: Approximately 5.73 crore voters

Polling Stations: 75,064

Polling Personnel Deployed: Over 3.75 lakh

Candidates in Fray: 4,023

Polling Agents: Over 4.21 lakh

Tech-Driven Monitoring and Smooth Conduct

The polling process was closely monitored by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, through live webcasting across 100% of polling stations.

Presiding Officers updated voter turnout data in real time using the ECINET platform, ensuring minimal delay in reporting trends.

Voter-Friendly Measures Rolled Out

The ECI introduced several initiatives aimed at improving voter experience and accessibility:

Colour photographs of candidates on EVM ballot units

Mobile Deposit Facility (MDF) for secure storage of personal items

Redesigned Voter Information Slips for better readability

Cap of 1,200 voters per polling station to reduce congestion

Focus on Accessibility

Special arrangements were made to ensure inclusive participation:

Wheelchairs and volunteers at polling stations

Transport facilities for Persons with Disabilities (PwD)

Data Status

The turnout figures are provisional, based on data uploaded by Presiding Officers via ECINET. Final figures, including Service Voters and Postal Ballots, will be released later in official index cards.

On the Polling day, Tamil Nadu chief electoral officer, Archana Patnaik, IAS, Pratap Singh, special observer, visited the state control room, to review polling day operations, with round-the-clock monitoring in place to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and transparent voting process across the state.

Party-wise Electoral Battle

The DMK is contesting 164 seats, leaving 70 to allies including the Congress, and has framed the election as a contest between Tamil Nadu and the “Delhi-NDA”, targeting the BJP-led Centre. The AIADMK, contesting 169 seats and allocating 65 to allies—including 27 to the BJP—has countered by attacking the DMK over alleged dynasty politics, law and order concerns, rising debt, and issues related to drugs and the safety of women and children. Vijay-led TVK, making its electoral debut, has fielded candidates in all 234 constituencies, signalling an ambitious statewide push.

Counting of votes will take place on May 4, deciding the next government, while the current Assembly’s tenure ends on May 10. To ensure peaceful and violence-free polling, the ECI has deployed around 1,700 companies of central armed police forces across Tamil Nadu.
