Srinagar: The University of Kashmir has suspended a Scientist-C from its Computer Sciences Department following his arrest in a rape case registered by J&K Police on the complaint of a 28-year-old woman.
According to an official order issued by the University’s Administration Teaching Section, the accused, identified as Sajad Mohammad Khan, a resident of Soura in Srinagar, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect in view of his detention in custody. The action has been taken under Rule 31 of the J&K Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1956, following his arrest in FIR No. 11 of 2026 registered at the Women’s Police Station, Rambagh.
Police have booked the accused under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after the woman lodged a detailed complaint alleging prolonged exploitation.
As per documents accessed by Kashmir Dot Com (KDC), the complainant has stated that the accused first approached her in 2018 and developed a romantic relationship with her, assuring marriage. She has alleged that during the course of this relationship, he established physical relations with her on multiple occasions under the pretext of marriage, which she claims led to repeated pregnancies that were later terminated at his insistence.
The complainant has further accused the scientist of financial exploitation, alleging that he pressured her into arranging substantial sums of money under different pretexts, including medical emergencies. She has also claimed that she was compelled to sell land in the Kanihama area of Budgam, dispose of gold ornaments, and take a loan from a UCO Bank branch in Srinagar in her name.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly used the money for constructing his residence and maintaining an expensive lifestyle.
The relationship reportedly deteriorated when the woman began insisting on marriage. She has further alleged that she was threatened with serious consequences, including harm to her life and that of her family, as well as the circulation of her private photographs on social media.
Officials confirmed that FIR No. 11, dated April 20, 2026, was registered at the Women’s Police Station, Rambagh, under relevant sections of law. The accused has been taken into custody, and investigations are currently underway to verify the allegations and gather further evidence.
Police have not issued an official statement beyond confirming the registration of the case and the arrest. University authorities, meanwhile, have stated that the suspension is a procedural step in line with service rules and that further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation. The case remains under active investigation.
