TN BJP leader K. Annamalai on April 14 made a scathing attack on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over his remarks on the proposed delimitation process, calling his “warning” to the Centre “uncalled for” and alleging that it was aimed at creating “fear” among the public.
Reacting to the Centre’s move ahead of a Special Session of Parliament scheduled to begin on April 16, in which amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, and a proposed Delimitation Bill are expected to be discussed to facilitate one-third reservation for women in Parliament, Annamalai told the media, “The Modi government is committed to taking all stakeholders along on the issue,” and dismissed Stalin’s concerns as an attempt to generate unnecessary apprehension among people in the state.
TN CM Stalin, in a video message, had cautioned the Centre against proceeding with delimitation in a manner that could adversely impact southern states.

He said, “Tamil Nadu will launch a large-scale agitation if its interests were compromised or if the southern region faced disproportionate consequences.” He also questioned the timing of the special session, noting that it coincides with Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal scheduled for April 23, adding, “Even if you choose to interpret it as a threat, we are not bothered… Hon’ble PM, I repeat, this is the final warning issued to you from Tamil Nadu.”
Stalin said, “The sword that hung over our heads has now descended upon us. In consultation with our DMK MPs, we are reaching out to Members of Parliament across states and devising a coordinated strategy to counter this grave danger. This is not about parties or individuals. It is about protecting the rights of our people. I appeal to all parties and MPs across India to unite to safeguard our democracy.”
Stalin, in a tweet on X platform, said, “Across Tamil Nadu, black flags will rise from homes and public spaces tomorrow in protest against delimitation. If the Union government refuses to respect Tamil Nadu’s voice and step back, you will face the consequences. The price you will pay will be heavy. As president of the DMK, and above all as a self-respecting Tamil, this is my stern warning.”

Annamalai said, “The Tamil Nadu CM, as usual, wants to do politics over nothing and everything. The mothers and sisters of Tamil Nadu want 33% reservation to be implemented as soon as possible. The TN CM is seeing defeat staring at him, and this is why he is making politics out of it.”

Annamalai told the media, “The kind of language the CM uses in that video is very unfortunate. He is saying that TN will go back to the 1960s and threatens the PM. Very unfortunate and fear-mongering. PM Modi is making all-out efforts to give respect to and representation to our mothers and sisters.”
Senior BJP leader SG Surya said, “The claim that South India will lose its political voice is completely baseless. With a uniform 50% increase in seats across all states, Tamil Nadu’s proportional representation in Parliament will remain 100% unchanged. Do not fall for the opposition’s fake narrative.”

Akilesh Mishra, in a post on X, said, “World over, it is settled that elected legislatures follow a principle of representative election — that is, per fixed population base, one MP seat (Lok Sabha in India) would be allocated. If this principle were assiduously followed in India, and 2011 census data was used (last available), the number of Lok Sabha seats in the Southern States would have been significantly lower than what the Modi Government is proposing through the 50% increase formula over present; and this fair principle evolved by the Modi Government also takes care of the fallacious arguments that some are floating that the absolute number of seats would diverge from present between Southern States and other states, thereby disadvantaging the Southern States.”

Annamalai, in a post on X, said, “Since 1996, the women’s reservation issue has been facing opposition. Many senior leaders of various political parties in the current INDIA bloc have opposed reservations for our mothers and sisters. The Prime Minister made the effort from September 2023 to pilot this and get this Bill passed in both Houses of Parliament by bringing everybody together.”
Adding, he said, “What is the problem of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister? Nowhere have we said it’s a population-based increase. Everywhere we have said we will take everybody together. The Home Minister in Coimbatore a year back said it’s going to be a pro rata increase.”
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswamy said, “CM Stalin was unable to accept the fact that the long-pending demand of providing 33% reservation for women was about to be fulfilled. Hence, Stalin’s opposition to the delimitation bill shows that he is gripped by the fear of losing the Assembly polls.
Critics point out whether the talk of delimitation has been made a big issue by the DMK and its allies. A couple of years ago, even without any speech from the PM or other senior leaders, Stalin issued statements condemning the same and misleading the public that TN would get a lesser number of seats. He is also against ‘one nation, one election’. Opposing all central schemes and sticker-pasting favourable ones are his hallmark during the five-year term. The election result will end his empty rhetoric and warnings.”
Neighbouring AP CM A. Revanth Reddy has written a letter to the PM calling for a national consensus on the proposed rise in seats. He has urged the Centre for immediate implementation of women’s reservation without linking it to seat increase. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said, “If numerical strength begins to determine power, the need for broad support across the nation will diminish. That is a dangerous shift.” West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “The BJP-led Modi government has tabled the delimitation bill to divide West Bengal and India at large. They are doing this to gain political mileage.”
The Congress, questioning the special session when some states are going to polls, said the Modi government was using women’s reservation as a façade to railroad inter-state redistribution of Lok Sabha seats without consultation and ahead of the 2020 polls. It said, “We will oppose this backdoor delimitation. We are 100% for women’s reservation and demand its immediate implementation within the existing strength of the Lok Sabha and assemblies.”
