Lenskart faces outrage over ‘selective dress code’ and demeaning Hindu culture; Is Hijab acceptable and not bindi

Lenskart faces intense backlash over its alleged dress code policy seen as discriminatory. Critics accuse the company of restricting Hindu symbols while allowing other religious attire, sparking outrage, boycott calls, and debate on workplace equality, cultural sensitivity, and corporate responsibility in a diverse society like India

BENGALURU: The controversy surrounding Lenskart has intensified into a full-scale public backlash, with critics strongly condemning the company’s alleged dress code policy as discriminatory, insensitive, and deeply divisive. What began as social media chatter has now snowballed into a larger debate on corporate accountability, cultural respect, and equal treatment in the workplace.

At the centre of the storm are claims that the company’s internal guidelines restrict traditional Hindu symbols such as bindi, sindoor, and sacred threads, while permitting other religious attire like hijab and turban under specific conditions. This perceived imbalance has triggered sharp criticism from various quarters, with many calling the policy “selective secularism” and questioning the company’s intent.

Critics argue that any corporate policy that differentiates between religious expressions risks violating the fundamental principle of equality. “A workplace should be inclusive for all, not selectively restrictive for some,” said one commentator, reflecting a sentiment that is gaining traction online. Many have pointed out that symbols like bindi and sindoor are not merely religious markers but are deeply embedded in cultural identity, especially for millions of women across India.

The backlash has been particularly fierce on social media, where users have accused Lenskart of attempting to erase visible aspects of Hindu identity under the guise of professionalism. Several posts have questioned why harmless cultural symbols are being targeted, while other forms of religious expression are allowed with defined guidelines. This, critics say, sends a troubling message about unequal standards.

Some voices have gone further, warning that such policies could set a dangerous precedent if left unchallenged. “Today it is bindi and sacred threads, tomorrow it could be something else. Where does it stop?” asked a user, highlighting concerns about the broader implications of such corporate decisions.

Civil society observers have also weighed in, emphasising that India’s diversity is its strength and must be reflected in workplace policies. They argue that inclusivity cannot be achieved by suppressing one identity while accommodating another. Instead, companies must adopt neutral, transparent, and balanced guidelines that respect all employees equally.

There is also growing frustration over the company’s silence on the issue. Despite the escalating outrage, Lenskart has yet to issue an official clarification or response. This lack of communication has only added to public anger, with many interpreting it as indifference or unwillingness to engage with legitimate concerns.

Industry experts note that while dress codes are a standard part of corporate environments, they must be implemented with cultural sensitivity and fairness. “Uniformity should not come at the cost of identity,” said one HR professional, stressing that modern workplaces must evolve to accommodate diversity rather than restrict it.

Calls for boycott have also begun to emerge, with some users urging others to reconsider their association with the brand until it provides a satisfactory explanation or revises its policy. While such reactions may be driven by emotion, they underline the seriousness of the issue and the potential reputational damage the company faces.

As the controversy continues to grow, the pressure is mounting on Lenskart to respond decisively. Observers believe that how the company handles this situation will not only determine its immediate public image but also set an example for corporate conduct in a culturally diverse society.
