Bhubaneswar: In a significant development with potential security implications, a 22-year-old from Bhubaneswar has been apprehended by the Delhi Police Special Cell for alleged links to radical elements and involvement in circulating content deemed detrimental to national security.

The accused, identified as Sheikh Imran, alias S.K. Imran, a resident of Unit-6, Ganga Nagar area, was detained on April 10 following a coordinated operation by the Delhi Police and the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police.

According to an official press release from the Commissionerate Police, this action stems from an ongoing investigation into suspected online radicalisation activities. About a week prior, the Special Cell of Delhi Police had detained a group of young individuals in Delhi for allegedly sharing radical content across various social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Signal.

During interrogation and analysis of their digital footprints, investigators reportedly uncovered links extending to Odisha. Acting on these findings, Delhi Police teams travelled to Bhubaneswar and, with assistance from local police, apprehended Sheikh Imran in the Unit-6 area.

Preliminary findings suggest that Imran, currently unemployed, was allegedly an active member of a radical online network. Police sources indicate that he engaged with closed groups on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Signal, where content promoting extremist ideologies was circulated.

Officials have stated that such activities pose a serious threat to national security, prompting swift and coordinated action by law enforcement agencies.

Following his detention, Imran was presented before the SDJM court in Bhubaneswar. He was subsequently placed on transit remand by Delhi Police for further interrogation and investigation into the extent of his involvement and possible links with other individuals or networks.

Authorities are now investigating the broader network to determine whether more individuals are connected to the case and to assess the scale of the alleged radicalisation efforts.

The recent arrests by Delhi Police suggest that the network employed a phased recruitment process, initially assigning low-risk tasks such as logistics, reconnaissance, and messaging, before escalating to more serious activities.

This case underscores growing concerns among security agencies about the misuse of digital platforms to spread extremist content and facilitate covert communication among suspected operatives.
