DHARWAD: A major controversy has erupted in Dharwad after members of Bajrang Dal locked a gym in protest against alleged sexual harassment by its trainer, Mohammed Sabir. The incident, reported from a fitness centre in the Maratha Colony area, has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over women’s safety.

According to complaints from gym-goers, Sabir had been allegedly engaging in inappropriate behaviour with women, particularly targeting Hindu girls who regularly attended the facility. Victims have accused him of indulging in “bad touch,” unnecessary physical contact during workouts, and making them feel uncomfortable under the pretext of training.

Several women claimed that the misconduct had been ongoing for some time. They alleged that the trainer would deliberately touch them inappropriately while demonstrating exercises and pass indecent remarks. Some complaints also suggested that he loitered near women’s restrooms and behaved suspiciously, further deepening fear among female members.

The issue came to the forefront after victims and local residents raised concerns about the repeated nature of the alleged harassment. The situation escalated when Bajrang Dal activists entered the gym premises, accusing the trainer of deliberately targeting Hindu women and ignoring prior warnings about his behaviour.

In a dramatic protest, activists locked the gym and demanded immediate action against the accused. They insisted that Sabir be brought to the spot and held accountable. Protesters expressed anger over what they described as a failure to act earlier despite complaints, stating that such incidents cannot be tolerated in a city known for its educational institutions and public spaces.

The protest created a tense atmosphere in the area, prompting police intervention. Personnel from the Upanagar police station rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and prevent any escalation. Authorities engaged with the protesters and assured them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

Police officials stated that they are in the process of collecting statements from the victims and witnesses. A formal complaint is expected to be filed, following which an FIR will be registered and legal proceedings initiated as per law. Officials emphasised that appropriate action will be taken based on evidence.

While the accused’s alleged actions have been widely condemned, legal experts and members of civil society have also stressed the importance of handling such cases within the framework of the law. They cautioned against vigilantism, noting that while public anger is understandable, due process must be followed to ensure justice.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about safety in gyms and other semi-private spaces. Women’s rights activists have called for stricter regulations, including background checks for trainers, installation of CCTV cameras, and the establishment of clear complaint mechanisms to address harassment.

“This is not just an isolated case. It highlights a systemic issue where women feel unsafe even in places meant for health and fitness. There must be zero tolerance for such behaviour,” said a local activist.

Parents and residents have also expressed concern, stating that such incidents create fear and discourage women from accessing public facilities. Many have urged authorities to take swift and strict action to restore confidence among women.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and preventing similar incidents in the future. The Dharwad case has once again underlined the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect women’s dignity and safety in everyday environments.
