Saharanpur: A wanted criminal carrying a Rs 1 lakh bounty, Shahzad (40), was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, Shahzad, accused in multiple serious cases, including illegal cattle slaughter, was intercepted near Sherpur village under Mirzapur police station limits around 3 PM. Acting on a tip-off, police teams from Mirzapur and Fatehpur surrounded him as he was allegedly heading to commit another crime.
Officials said Shahzad refused to surrender and opened fire while attempting to escape, triggering an exchange of gunfire. During the encounter, two constables, Somendra and Kuldeep, sustained bullet injuries to their hands and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Police returned fire, injuring Shahzad. He was initially taken to the Community Health Centre in Behat and later referred to the district hospital, where he was declared dead.
Senior officials, including DIG Abhishek Singh, visited the injured personnel and commended their bravery. Police described Shahzad as a hardened offender with a long criminal history. Records indicate that Shahzad had over 40 cases registered against him across Saharanpur, including charges under cow slaughter laws and the Gangster Act. He was a resident of Gandevda village in the Fatehpur police station area. Security has been tightened in the region following the encounter to maintain law and order.
