Tamil Nadu is witnessing an increase in sexual attacks against women and minors. On top of that, some cases are linked to religion, where certain Islamic elements are actively indulging in alleged love jihad cases, concealing their identity and exploiting victims. If the situation is favourable, they convert them into Islam or abandon them. This is a serious issue that society is gradually becoming aware of, but still some women are blindly falling into the trap. The vulnerability of the victims is becoming easy prey for such predators.
In a recent incident, Thousand Lights All Women Police arrested a 30-year-old man, Ayub Akram (30), for cheating a woman on a false promise of marriage. He did not disclose his true identity, religion, or his earlier marriage to the Hindu girl victim. The victim is a 25-year-old woman employed as a beautician from Bengaluru. She met Ayub Akram during a friend’s marriage engagement ceremony in Chennai in 2025. He laid a trap and enticed her with false promises. Slowly, their friendship blossomed. Both exchanged social media handles and mobile numbers and chatted on social media platforms.
It is learnt that following her mother’s death, her father remarried. The girl (victim) lived under the care of her grandmother in Bengaluru. Gradually, their acquaintance developed into a romantic relationship. Akram made false promises and gave assurances that he would marry her. Believing his words, the woman had physical and intimate relations with Akram on several occasions at a lodge in Nungambakkam, resulting in her becoming pregnant. When she told Akram about her pregnancy, he discussed their marriage and sent her back to Bengaluru.
Upon returning to Bengaluru, the woman experienced severe abdominal pain and was admitted to a hospital. Doctors informed her that she had suffered a miscarriage. When the woman confronted Akram, she discovered that he had concealed the fact that he was already married. Akram began ignoring her calls and issuing threats. After realising she was duped and cheated, she filed a complaint at Thousand Lights All Women Police Station. Police arrested Akram, a resident of Kodungaiyur. He was produced before a Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody.
In another incident, police arrested a 33-year-old private bank manager, Dinesh, a resident of Pommadimalai in Pudukkottai district, for allegedly sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl after luring her with a promise of financial support and marriage. Media reports claim he had developed an acquaintance with a woman from his locality. Taking advantage of the trust, he allegedly took the woman’s 11-year-old daughter away, promising to support her education and marry her in the future. The mother of the girl, along with the manager’s parents, allegedly left the minor alone with the accused in a separate house. It was during this period that he is accused of subjecting the minor to sexual harassment.
Locals who grew suspicious of the situation alerted the Child Helpline by dialling 1098. District Child Protection Officer Vasanthakumari rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry with the victim. The child was subsequently rescued and admitted to a hospital for medical examination.
In Vilathikulam, where a 17-year-old Plus Two student who went out to attend nature’s call was abducted, raped, and brutally killed is still fresh in the memory of locals who have been protesting to arrest the culprits, another harrowing incident has occurred. This time too, a 4-year-old girl who was playing near her house was sexually assaulted.

In Chennai, a gang of at least 10 men harassed a Class 10 student when she was returning home after a public examination. They pulled her dupatta (chunni) and threatened her brother when he questioned their actions. The goons went to their home, ransacked the house, and damaged vehicles parked in Veeraganallur near Tiruttani. They hurled stones and other objects and damaged ceiling fans in several houses. They made the entire area resemble a war-torn zone. This happened on March 16; affected villagers held a road blockade, and police pacified them to withdraw the protest.
As sexual attacks on women and minors continue to be reported, the DMK is evading answers on the safety and security under its rule. In many cases, it has emerged that the accused were politically connected to the DMK, and the lack of action from the police is emboldening criminals without bounds. All this speaks to the deteriorating law and order in Tamil Nadu under CM MK Stalin, who holds the Home portfolio.
