CHENNAI: Demolition of yet another Hindu temple by the DMK regime in Nellai has outraged the feelings and sentiments of the devotees in Tirunelveli. In Tirunelveli district, at Siddamalli, there was a Vinayagar temple. Devotees visited the temple daily and conducted poojas, abhishekams, and festivals. On March 10, officials from both the revenue and police departments came to the temple area and demolished it despite stiff resistance from the locals and devotees.

Hearing the demolition, Hindu Munnani cadres rushed to the spot. Devotees led by Hindu Munnani Nellai district advocate wing district general secretary Manikanda Mahadevan opposed the demolition.  Police officials forcibly removed them before demolishing the temple.

They say that during the 5 years of DMK rule, there were over 300 Hindu temples demolished due to various reasons, mainly encroaching on government lands or water bodies. They point out that despite court orders, places of worship of minority communities were untouched in the state, which is a partisan attitude of the Dravidian model DMK government’s function.

Social media activist Saravana Prasad Balasubramanian, in a post on X, says, “In Nellai Vannarapettai Bharani Nagar, without proper approval, a mosque is being built. Locals have brought the matter to the attention of the District magistrate, but no action has been taken so far. Who is building, what type of building, whether it has received any approval from Corporation authorities, local planning bodies, etc., is baffling. The building is constructed without providing any mandatory space from the road and street, in clear violation of the rules.  It has been learnt that the construction is being carried out by a Muslim from Kayalpattinam with the ruling party’s support. The works are going on a fast space. Hindu Munnani has assured that they will take up the matter and has planned to organise a massive protest to stop the illegal mosque/dargah construction.

Women attempted to self-immolate, condemning the encroachment clearance drive by the authorities in Kolamanagalam near Hosur recently.  Officials retrieved lands belonging to the temple worth Rs. 2 crores. Local People objected to the demolition of a building constructed in a 1,120-square-foot area.

Meanwhile, in Thiruchendur, one of the six abodes of Bhagawan Murugan, security guards ( private firm) celebrated a birthday bash inside the Subramaniya Swamy temple premises. Devotees say it is against agamas and a clear violation of temple rules. It has spoiled the sanctity of the temple, which is visited daily by thousands of devotees. It has now been a regular one, says Hindu Munnani. It seeks the revocation of the contract awarded to a private security firm, which has violated the terms of the agreement it entered into with the temple management.

Recently, a supporter of actor-politician Vijay illegally accessed the microphone at the Palani Dhandayudhapani Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu to play a film song on the PA system, prompting an FIR and an internal inquiry.p

In another incident, a temple sub-staff member sang cine songs with dance movements inside the temple premises, which was being watched and appreciated by his seniors. A video in this regard went viral on social media. Critics say, “Now the temple has become an entertainment spot like theatres and amusement parks. There have been incidents of temple staff consuming liquor and eating non-veg foods.  HR and CE is only bothered about temple revenue. Temples should be freed from government control for their better maintenance, proper upkeep of land records, and revenue.
