The Union government’s decision to appoint R. N. Ravi, currently serving as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, as the new constitutional head of West Bengal follows the sudden resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose, who had assumed office in 2022.
Confirming the development, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she had been informed about the decision by Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister. In a post on social media platform X, Banerjee stated that the established convention of consulting the state government before appointing a Governor had not been followed in this case.
The development comes at a time when both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are preparing for Assembly elections scheduled for 2026, leading political observers to closely examine the implications of the move.
Who Is RN Ravi?
Ravindra Narayan Ravi, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service officer from the Kerala cadre, has had a long career in India’s security and intelligence establishment. After completing his post-graduation in physics, Ravi joined the IPS and went on to serve in several key institutions, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
In 2014, he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office, a key body responsible for coordinating national-level intelligence assessments. Later, in 2018, Ravi was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor, where he helped coordinate national security policy.
Following his retirement from active service, Ravi was appointed Governor of Nagaland and given additional charge of the Governor of Meghalaya. In 2021, he was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, where his tenure has been marked by several disagreements with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Is the Move Linked to the 2026 Elections?
The timing of the governor reshuffle has drawn attention from political analysts, as both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are heading toward Assembly elections in 2026.
While governors play a largely constitutional role, they often become important figures during politically sensitive situations such as government formation, legislative disputes, or constitutional crises.
Political Implications for West Bengal
With RN Ravi set to assume office in West Bengal, the relationship between the state government and Raj Bhavan will be closely watched in the coming months. Political analysts believe the leadership change could influence the administrative and political dynamics in the state as it moves toward the next electoral cycle.
Meanwhile, questions remain about the circumstances behind C. V. Ananda Bose’s resignation and the broader reasoning behind the reshuffle.
As the state prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections, the new appointment is likely to remain a subject of intense political discussion, with both supporters and critics interpreting its significance differently.
