Tiruvananthapuram: In its maiden Budget after assuming office, the BJP-led Tiruvananthapuram Corporation on 24 February unveiled an ambitious development roadmap for 2026–27, projecting the highest-ever income in its history at ₹2,500 crore, with an estimated expenditure of ₹2,253 crore and a surplus of ₹246 crore, while prioritising housing, healthcare infrastructure, employment, urban development and social welfare initiatives aimed at transforming the capital city into the country’s best by 2030.
Presenting the Budget, Deputy Mayor Asha Nath G S outlined a development-oriented framework with strong emphasis on housing for the homeless, backed by urban development programmes of the Union Government.
Under the housing schemes, deserving beneficiaries will receive full financial support from the Corporation for house construction, with ₹20 crore allocated for the Pradhan Mantri Bhavana Yojana.
As part of the Budget allocations, ₹273 crore has been earmarked under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme for drinking water projects, along with sewerage development and rejuvenation of water bodies across the city.

In addition, centrally sponsored projects worth approximately ₹797.82 crore under the combined AMRUT 1 and AMRUT 2 phases will support Tiruvananthapuram’s development.
Further, ₹151 crore in central assistance has been allocated under the second phase of the Smart City initiative — Cities 2.0 — for strengthening solid waste management systems in the city.

Linking welfare with urban sustainability, ₹2 crore has been earmarked for the Atal Canteen scheme aimed at building a “Hungerless City,” while ₹1 crore has been allocated for an Atal Supermarket initiative.
In the healthcare sector, ₹1.5 crore has been set aside for the Prime Health Lab ‘City Scanning’ centre for MRI and X-ray services in collaboration with Hindustan Latex Limited, along with plans to launch 50 collection centres with HIL.
Tourism and cultural integration also find mention in the Budget, with ₹50 lakh allocated for a Spiritual Tourism Circuit connecting Padmanabha Swami temple, Attukal temple, Vettukkatu temple and Beemapalli mosque.
Employment and livelihood initiatives include ₹5 crore for an employment guarantee scheme for all above 18 years of age, ₹30 lakh for vocational training for women, ₹50 lakh for transgender welfare and ₹20 lakh for their vocational training, along with ₹10 lakh for skill development of youth and women.
The civic body has also proposed the ‘Sunrise’ scheme aimed at making Tiruvananthapuram the first senior citizen-friendly city in the country.
Mayor V.V. Rajesh, speaking prior to the presentation, stated that the Budget envisions transforming Tiruvananthapuram into the best city in the country by 2030, with long-term plans targeting global standards by 2035.
Expanding the city’s global engagement, the Deputy Mayor announced plans for setting up an international office to prepare Tiruvananthapuram for hosting global sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games. A ₹15 lakh project has also been announced in collaboration with NORKA for foreign language training in German, English and French.
Urban infrastructure has received significant attention, including ₹20 crore for constructing 200 modern public washrooms, ₹10 crore for sewerage network development, ₹10 crore for model roads linking Corporation wards and ₹5 crore for township development around Puthanppalam.
Reacting on this budget, BJP Keralam President Rajeev Chandrashekhar, said “After decades of LDF-UDF neglect and mismanagement, our capital now has a clear roadmap for the future.”

Addressing civic concerns, ₹3 crore has been allocated for shelters to tackle stray dog issues, ₹3 crore for an Animal Birth Control Centre and ₹50 lakh for a portable crematorium. Other allocations include ₹2 crore for a multiplex complex in Namam and ₹25 lakh for Flex Poster-Free Zones.
Local observers described the Budget as development-oriented, with the BJP leadership expressing confidence in securing Union Government support for implementation. Notably, opposition parties have not yet raised major criticisms.
