According to reports, the violence began after a member of the Tangkhul Naga community, identified as Sterling, was assaulted. He was accused by the attackers of pointing a torchlight towards them. They also alleged that separate rooms were used to physically torture those who resisted conversion. Some victims claimed they were prevented from observing Hindu festivals and fasts, including Navratri, and that Hindu religious symbols and idols were mocked or disrespected during these incidents.
Several individuals, including Kajal Thakur, Prabha Patel, Tanushree Vishakha, and Nakusha Kinnar, publicly identified themselves as victims.
