A controversy has erupted after three Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs from Calgary), Canada reportedly visited Punjab between February 15 and 17 without publicly disclosing the trip. The visit drew attention after photos and videos surfaced on social media, prompting questions in Canadian political circles and among commentators.
The MPs identified in the visit include, Jasraj Singh Hallan, Amanpreet Singh Gill and Dalwinder Gill. Despite the circulation of images and videos from Punjab, the MPs’ social media accounts reportedly did not mention the visit, which became the primary reason for the controversy. Notably, the MPs themselves did not share any videos, photos or information about their Punjab visit on their social media accounts.
During their Punjab visit, the MPs visited Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar on February 15. They were honoured by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and held discussions with SGPC members and religious leaders. The MPs also engaged with political figures in Punjab, including, Congress leader Pargat Singh, with whom immigration issues affecting Punjabi students and workers in Canada were discussed. They also met senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal.
A separate meeting involving Deputy Leader of CPC and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Gateway Tim Uppal and Bikram Singh Majithia also surfaced in media reports, adding to the debate. The issue gained traction after Canadian investigative journalist Mocha Bezirgan and social media users began raising questions about the nature and transparency of the trip.
Statements by Congress MLA Pargat Singh suggested that immigration challenges faced by Punjabi students and workers in Canada were discussed during the meetings. However, critics argued that foreign politicians discussing Canadian domestic policy outside official channels raises diplomatic and political sensitivities.
Mocha Bezirgan also questioned whether such interactions could be interpreted as political outreach or interference, especially when meetings involved leaders facing legal scrutiny in India. He also asked, “So, Canadian Conservative leadership secretly went to Punjab to discuss the “challenges faced by Punjabi students and workers in Canada due to stricter immigration policies”.
